VA - Lyrical Genius (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2

LYRICAL GENIUS

VA - Lyrical Genius (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2

Lyric writing can be a very difficult process. Finding words that carries exactly what a songwriter feels, while making them fit into a certain melody and tempo, as well as the sound of the words being pleasing to the ear. Sometimes the lyrics come first suggesting a certain feel or mood that inspires a melody. That is the power of a good word. Great song lyrics have the power to move you, whether it’s a tear of happiness or sadness. This is the songwriter’s gift.  Others lyrics can be simply catchy, sing-a-long lyrics they stick in your head, even if they’re completely meaningless.

Some of the best lyrics can read like the finest poetry. Handpicked words that give you a sense of what the songwriter wants you to hear and in such a way that your imagination works overtime. Poems and lyrics, while usually interchanged by many people, are actually very different, there is a real difference with poetry and lyrics. Words in a poem take place against the background of silence and lyrics take place in the framework of thoughtful and sympathetic musical composition where melody, rhythm, instrumentation, the singer’s voice and other makings of the recording to name a few.

You could easily argue that Bob Dylan, Cole Porter, Leonard Cohen, Lou Reed, Neil You and Nick Cave are indeed poets as well as songwriters. It’s a tricky job alright and it is rare to craft exquisite lyrics like theirs.

I'm not going to suggest that words or music are better than each other, because both have their place and I am moved by either if in the correct mood. But I will say when a poetic phrase is combined with emotional music and comes across by a singer who means it, then I am truly moved by their words.

Enjoy!
