LETTERS & POSTCARDS
The handwritten word is almost gone, as are the days of scented letters delivered from the other side of the world, thoughts expressed in pen, filled with longing, joy, sadness, and adventure. Writing letters is not just happy occasion for the receiver. The activity has a sort of therapeutic effect on the writer and naturally puts you in a thoughtful and peaceful mood.
Of course I acknowledge that some handwritten correspondence can be emotional and saddening, as in farewell notes and goodbye letters from a loved companion, but nonetheless it is a real expression from the authors own mind, expressing their feelings and thoughts. It is still beautiful and needed.
It is in fact harder to write a letter today and post it. It takes thought and courage to do. You can't delete it as you can on a prepared email.
Writing a letter is a visual and tactile experience. It is a deliberate act of exposure, a form of vulnerability, because handwriting opens a window on the soul in a way that cyber communication can never do.
