LOUIS ARMSTRONG

Louis Armstrong - Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man 1923-1934 [1994] (4 x CD's)

A four-CD sampling of some of the most important work by the greatest jazz musician of them all. Armstrong's virtuosic improvisations came flashing out of the ensembles of early New Orleans like lightning, making jazz a soloist's art form. If that weren't enough, Armstrong more or less invented jazz singing to boot. Beginning with a taste of Armstrong's work with his mentor, King Oliver, and moving through his mercurial work as a sideman with Fletcher Henderson and Clarence Williams, this set includes generous helpings of his landmark Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings, "Heebie Jeebies," "Struttin' with Some Barbecue," "Potato Head Blues," "Gully Low Blues," "West End Blues," -- with an unaccompanied Armstrong introduction that alerted the world to the artistic potential of jazz improvisation --and the stunning duet with Earl Hines, "Weather Bird"-- the template for 20th-century music was engraved here. This set moves on to the Louis Armstrong Orchestra, his powerhouse big band of the 1930s, beginning with his landmark 1929 reworking of the popular hit "I Can't Give You Anything but Love." One of PORTRAIT's virtues is its gathering of Armstrong's work as a sideman with an array of singers, from the blues singers (Bessie Smith, Maggie Jones, Bertha "Chippie" Hill) to the obscurities (Hociel Thomas, Lillie Delk Christian, Seger Ellis) to "The Singing Brakeman" Jimmie Rodgers, the single meeting of the father of country music and the father of jazz. Indeed, the public may have called him "Satchmo," but jazz musicians always called him "Pops," the father of them all. Every jazz musician can reiterate Dizzy Gillespie's four-word tribute to Louis Armstrong: "No him, no me." (barnesandnoble.com)
Please look at the great talent on these CD's. Satch, of course, Fatha Hines, Fletch Henderson, King Oliver and others. Jazz legends all. Ah, but there is a hidden gem. I bought this box set for one song: "Blue Yodel #9" by Jimmy Rodgers, AKA "The Mississippi Blue Yodeler". If you're considering buying this set you are a fan of early jazz. Me too. I'm also a fan of early county.  I like the sophistication of jazz and the simplicity of early country. The are married here. What a wonderful surprise to find Jimmy Rodgers and Louis Armstrong together. THIS is music history!! (Amazon)
