BUBBLEGUM POP
VA - Bubblegum Classics Volume 01 - Volume 5 [1995 - 1998] (5 X CD's)
Varese Vintage rolls out this generous collection of hits and misses exemplifing the good fun bubblegum music of the era. While many so-called bubblegum compilations are heavy on the Buddah groups such as the 1910 Fruitgum Co. and Ohio Express, here a wider net is cast yielding a more diversified gathering of tunes but still loosely falling under the "bubblegum" umbrella.
In amongst the major and familiar hits here are a number of lesser-known tunes that add interest beyond what's heard on the same old oldies playlists. Thrown in are a few total misses that illustrate how some record companies were willing to try to make a buck on just about anything that may have ridden the coattails of popular hits. Among the rarities found here are the Cuff Links' (actually Ron Dante overdubbed) "Tracy" followup, "When Julie Comes Around", a tune just missing the top 40 domestically but making top 10 in the U.K., Thee Prophets' only chart appearance "Playgirl" and "Grooviest Girl In The World", a minor hit from The Fun And Games. (Amazon)
For bubblegum fans, this piece provides an interesting mix of hits and rarities representing some of the best of the genre as well as a few examples of "what were they thinking?" wanna-be's.

Thank you for this collection, Butter. Until only a couple years ago, Bubblegum as a breakout genre of pop music was unknown to me... and invariably, Bubblegum compilations have lots of my favorites on board - this one's no exception; thanks again.
ReplyDeleteHi Aging Child,
DeleteBubblegum is often dismissed and teenybopper music, but how wrong that is. Some of the music is pure class and Pop at its finest. I'll pick up anything that has copy of Edison Lighthouse Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)or Capt. Groovy And His Bubblegum Army on it. Chew on this gum...
Cheers
You knew this one would get my attention.. I too have this set. I have never been quite comfortable tho with the label of Bubblegum. Back when this music was out it was all just part of the pop soundscape. If there's enough of anything in a particular style it's eventually ripe for a label of it's own I guess. Some tunes here are obviously "Bubblegummy" but I've found it interesting how many songs will be labeled Bubblegum that seem better suited to other sub-genre, or just plain Pop.. and don't forget about Sunshine Pop, Bubblegum's close cousin! So I think Bubblegum has become overblown(ha!) and it's labeling a bit convoluted. This set doesn't help things by issuing a 4th volume called Soulful Pop that is really JUST THAT and not Bubblegum at all. At least that's my crazy observation. Oh well, whatever anyone wants to call it.. I liked all this stuff then and now and that's all that really matters to me. Thanks BB!
ReplyDeleteHi mr.Radio,
DeleteI always enjoy your observations. As I responded to Aging Child above, "Bubblegum is often dismissed and teenybopper music, but how wrong that is. Some of the music is pure class and Pop at its finest.". But I really like what you said at the end of your comments, "Oh well, whatever anyone wants to call it.. I liked all this stuff then and now and that's all that really matters to me.". Just enjoy the sounds.
Cheers
Oh.. I'm right with you on that Edison Lighthouse song, and in the same breath I would mention the Flying Machine one as well. As many times as I've heard them, they've never outworn their welcome. I originally started to collect these CD's because of the inclusion of songs from two specific artists: The Peppermint Rainbow and Bobby Sherman. Their songs were great little pop gems.. I thing I'm gonna have to go listen again now!
DeleteBB, thanks for this, having lived through bubblegum as a grown up I've always had a soft spot for it! Oh I couldn't see Beethoven on Sundays TZ have you stopped posting it or are my eyes getting worse?

Have used a VPN and the link now works

Hi Marley,
DeleteThat is great news. Enjoy the rest of the set as well.
PS (Apologies for naming you Unknown in my previous response)
Cheers.
Hi Butterboy
ReplyDeleteStill enjoying this Bubblegum set so many classic tracks
The 5th volume with Tony Burrows moonlighting across several groups is intriguing
He had at least 6 solo singles on Bell and a few on Ammo and Bus Stop in the 70’s
Do you know if his solo singles have been comped anywhere ?
Please repost VA - Bubblegum Classics Volume 05 [1998] The Voice Of Tony Burrows. Thanks in advance.

Here it is a year later and I found your site. I was looking for the Bubblegum Classics Volumes. I only need volume 4, myself. I used to own them all but left volume 4 in my car on a very hot day and it got so warped some of the layers peeled off. Thanks for a great site! You rock!
ReplyDeleteHi knoiro,
DeleteWelcome.
I hope you find other gems here on BB blog.
Glad you now have the full set again.
Cheers.
