Originally, the term “Krautrock” was a playful moniker established in the early 1970s by the music press in the UK. It’s commonly believed that either John Peel, a British disc jockey, or the UK music publication Melody Maker, where German experimental bands were initially met with great enthusiasm, were responsible for its creation. However, there are also reports suggesting that Melody Maker, a renowned British music magazine, had a significant hand in the inception of the term. Despite its initial usage as a somewhat pejorative label, it has since been adopted and is now broadly utilized to categorize this pioneering and impactful music genre.

While Julian Cope, an artist and musicologist, didn’t originate the term ‘Krautrock’, he has been instrumental in its promotion. In his book “Krautrocksampler”, he presented the term ‘Krautrock’ in a positive light, with a touch of glam rock flair. He articulated that ‘Krautrock’ is a uniquely British interpretation, reflecting how the music was received in the United Kingdom. Therefore, although he wasn’t the creator of the term, he undeniably played a key role in its broad acceptance and comprehension and widespread use.
