MURDER BALLADS

VA - Ballads of Blood & Betrayal (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3

Murder ballads, now seen as darkly captivating, began in the Middle Ages as a way to share news. These songs spread stories and sparked discussions within communities. They were a form of oral tradition, passed down through generations, and served as a means of preserving history and culture. The tales told in these ballads often revolved around real-life events, such as murders, executions, and other crimes, and were used to inform and entertain the public.

Unlike today’s music, where artists explore crimes for artistic expression, nonetheless these are still ground in historical references to murder ballads which continue to serve as a unique news platform. Murder ballads gained prominence in Britain, Ireland, Scotland, and Scandinavia during the 16th and 17th centuries. These regions had a rich tradition of storytelling, and murder ballads were an important part of this tradition. The ballads were often sung at public gatherings, such as fairs and markets, and were a popular form of entertainment.

As European settlers moved to the Appalachian region of the United States, they brought this tradition with them. The Appalachian region, which includes states such as New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, the Carolinas, Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee, became a melting pot of cultures and traditions. The settlers brought with them their songs and stories, and the tradition of murder ballads continued to thrive in this new environment. These tales, passed down through generations, were meticulously recorded preserving the tradition of murder ballads and ensuring that these stories were not lost to history.

Some ballads have become enduring folklore. These songs are based on real events and have been passed down through generations, becoming an important part of the cultural heritage of both Europe and America. They continue to be performed and recorded by contemporary artists, keeping the tradition of murder ballads alive and continue to captivate and intrigue listeners.

There are 63 songs featured in this collection of songs that tell dark and haunting tales of murder and mayhem, drawing on the rich history of murder ballads. Many are not by the original artists as I have listened to many versions and these all seem to fit better. As usual a mix of old and new. I hope you enjoy exploring this selection of haunting tales. 1. Hi BB, very clever project. It's literally an open book. This also represents so many gateways to artists with “deep” worlds (I’m thinking of Nick Cave of course but also Matt Elliott). Thanks a lot.

  2. My kids loved the Decemberists. But they made me skip the Shankhill Butchers because it scared them.
