GEORGE BENSON
VA - George Benson, The Sideman Project (A Butterboy Compilation) + George Benson - Solo (A Butterboy Compilation) (9 x CDs)
George Benson, born on March 22, 1943, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a celebrated American jazz guitarist, singer, and songwriter. From an early age, Benson demonstrated extraordinary musical talent, performing in nightclubs by the age of seven and recording his first single at nine. This prodigious start laid the groundwork for a legendary career that spans multiple genres, including jazz, R&B, and pop. With accolades such as ten Grammy Awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Benson is renowned for his virtuosic guitar playing, smooth vocals, and innovative artistry. While his solo success is remarkable, his contributions as a sideman have equally defined his impact on the music world.
Benson’s career as a sideman began to take shape in the 1960s when he joined the Jack McDuff Quartet. This collaboration with the iconic organist provided Benson with an ideal platform to refine his technique and explore soul jazz, a genre that strongly influenced his early work. His ability to complement McDuff’s dynamic organ playing with his fluid guitar lines marked Benson as an exceptional team player and solidified his reputation as a highly skilled sideman.
As his career progressed, Benson collaborated with an array of legendary musicians, bringing his distinctive sound to their projects. Notably, his work with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard on the album Straight Life highlights his talent for enhancing complex compositions. Benson’s melodic and rhythmic guitar lines added a distinctive texture to Hubbard’s adventurous trumpet solos, demonstrating his ability to elevate the overall musical experience.
Benson's collaborations also extended to saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, particularly on the iconic album Sugar. His contributions to Turrentine’s soulful and expressive saxophone performances provided a smooth and rhythmic foundation, enhancing the album's rich, jazzy atmosphere. Additionally, Benson’s brief but impactful collaboration with Miles Davis showcased his ability to adapt to Davis’s avant-garde musical vision. His warm, intricate guitar work complemented Davis’s innovative compositions, further affirming Benson’s versatility and artistry.
A standout collaboration in George Benson's career was his work with Earl Klugh on the 1987 album Collaboration. This smooth jazz milestone showcased the seamless interplay between Benson's expressive electric guitar and Klugh's refined classical guitar. Together, they created a cohesive and melodious fusion that resonated with listeners. The album's acclaim underscored Benson's exceptional talent for immersing himself in diverse musical settings while preserving his distinctive artistry.
Throughout his illustrious career, George Benson has consistently excelled as a sideman, enriching the works of countless artists. His profound musical intuition, technical expertise, and collaborative spirit have left an indelible mark on jazz and beyond, cementing his legacy as one of the most accomplished and influential guitarists in modern music history.
This collection of 152 tracks showcases George Benson's contributions as a sideman on albums by various artists. Beyond highlighting Benson's remarkable input to these exceptional pieces, it stands as a captivating jazz anthology that every music enthusiast should take the time to appreciate. All tracks are presented in chronological date order (except track 1).
As a BONUS I have created a George Benson Solo set consisting of 30 tracks, from his first recording at just 11 years old "It Should Have Been Me No. 2" in 1954; to his latest tracks from his most recent album was "Walking to New Orleans" released in 2019 at the age of 76.
George Benson, Solo (A Butterboy Compilation)
George Benson's solo career is a remarkable journey of musical innovation and crossover success. Emerging from the jazz world as a prodigious guitarist, Benson's solo work brought him international acclaim, blending jazz, R&B, and pop into a seamless and accessible style. His 1976 album Breezin' was groundbreaking, becoming the first jazz album to achieve platinum status. The hit single "This Masquerade" showcased his silky-smooth vocals alongside his virtuosic guitar skills, solidifying his dual identity as a singer and instrumentalist.
Benson's later works, such as Give Me the Night [1980] and 20/20 [(1985], maintained his chart-topping success with a fusion of upbeat rhythms and soulful melodies. His ability to evolve and innovate while staying true to his roots has earned him ten Grammy Awards and enduring admiration from fans and critics alike. Benson's solo career exemplifies his ability to transcend genres, leaving a lasting legacy in music history. (B)

¡Hola Butterboy!

Hi Michel.
DeleteIt’s wonderful to see your appreciation for this massive collection of his performances. This "titanic" compilation offers a rare insight into the full breadth of Benson's collaborations. Benson’s legacy is undeniable, both as a solo artist and a sideman, his ability to blend technical brilliance with deep musical intuition makes him one of the most versatile jazz guitarists of all time. I am delighted that you are impressed by this compilation/box set. You see another side of my love for individuals who stand out without being flamboyant.
Thank you, as always, for your gifted link to even more George Benson.

¡Hola Butterboy!
"Music weaves itself into the fabric of our emotions..."
