THE MANY FACES OF...
VA - The Many Faces Of Ramones [2014] (3 x CDs)
Released in 2014 by Music Brokers, The Many Faces of Ramones is a three-CD unofficial compilation that explores the sprawling legacy of punk’s most iconic band — not just through their own music, but through side projects, collaborations, and the songs that shaped them. It’s part tribute, part family tree, and part musical archaeology.
Disc 1 and 2, titled The Family Tree, feature tracks by Ramones members in various guises: Joey Ramone with Die Toten Hosen on “Blitzkrieg Bop,” Dee Dee Ramone’s solo work, Marky Ramone & The Intruders, CJ Ramone’s Bad Chopper, and even Tommy Ramone’s Uncle Monk. There are guest appearances from Lemmy, Nina Hagen, Joan Jett, and Lux Interior, adding layers to the Ramones’ punk orbit.
Disc 3, The Originals, is a crate-digger’s delight — showcasing the songs the Ramones famously covered or drew inspiration from. You’ll find “Surfin’ Bird” by The Trashmen, “California Sun” by The Rivieras, and “Needles and Pins” by The Searchers, alongside garage and surf classics from Jan & Dean, The Seeds, and Max Frost & The Troopers.
Though unofficial, the set is thoughtfully sequenced and packed with rarities, including live cuts and lesser-known collaborations. It’s not just for die-hard fans; it’s for anyone curious about the connective tissue between punk rock and the broader musical landscape that fed it. A digipak release with foldout packaging, it’s a punk historian’s mixtape with heart and grit. (B)
