Stang Getz - The Complete Roost Recordings [1997] (3 x CDs)
Before Stan Getz became synonymous with bossa nova and the breezy elegance of Jazz Samba, he was already making waves at Roost Records. This 3CD box set, released in 1997, pulls together every session Getz recorded for the label between 1950 and 1954, and it’s a treasure trove. From tight quartet dates to lush collaborations with guitarist Johnny Smith, the set captures Getz in full bloom: lyrical, warm, and unmistakably himself.
There’s a youthful charm to early tracks like “Hershey Bar” and “Tootsie Roll,” but don’t let the candy-coated titles fool you, Getz’s tone is already rich and refined, his phrasing effortlessly melodic. The Moonlight in Vermont sessions with Smith are especially gorgeous, almost chamber-like in their intimacy. And the live cuts from Storyville add a welcome dose of grit and spontaneity, showing Getz stretching out in front of an audience.
The remastering is clean and respectful, preserving the analog warmth while giving each instrument room to breathe. Liner notes are thorough, with full discographical details that make it easy to track personnel and recording dates, ideal for archivists and collectors. It’s also worth noting that the Penguin Guide to Jazz gave this set its coveted “Crown” rating, calling it essential listening.
For anyone interested in Getz’s journey before the Brazilian wave hit, this box is a front-row seat to his formative years. He’s not finding his voice here, he’s already singing. (B)
