VA - Plastic Compilation Vol. 1+6 [1997-2002] (6 x CDs)

The Plastic Compilation series released by Nettwerk America between 1997 and 2002, is a six-volume snapshot of late-’90s and early-2000s electronic music culture, curated with club precision and a crate-digger’s ear. Each CD blends progressive house, trance, big beat, and electro, often featuring extended mixes and rare remixes that were hard to find outside of vinyl or promo pools.

Volume 01 (1997) set the tone with tracks like Underworld’s “Pearl’s Girl,” Rabbit in the Moon’s remix of Sarah McLachlan’s “Possession,” and The Chemical Brothers’ “Loops of Fury.” These weren’t just album cuts, they were full-length club edits, often running 7-10 minutes, mastered for dancefloor fidelity. The series continued with Volume 02, expanding into deeper trance and breakbeat territory, and by Volume 03, includes artists like BT, Sasha, and The Crystal Method were anchoring the tracklists. Volume 04 (2001) and Volume 05 leaned into melodic trance and vocal-driven remixes, while the lesser-known Volume 06 featured standout cuts like Gabriel & Dresden’s mix of “Mindcircus” and Röyksopp’s remix of Felix Da Housecat’s “What Does It Feel Like?”

Each volume was compiled by George Maniatis, with mastering by Craig Waddell and design by John Rummen, giving the series a consistent visual and sonic identity. The packaging leaned minimalist, clean typography, abstract imagery, but the content was anything but.

What makes the Plastic series special is its balance, it captured the underground pulse while remaining accessible, offering full-length versions that DJs and fans alike could appreciate. It’s a time capsule of a pre-streaming era when CD compilations were curated with care, and remix culture was thriving. For collectors, it’s worth having all six volumes, not just for the music, but for the sequencing, mastering, and the snapshot it offers of a scene in motion. (B)
