IKE QUEBEC & JOHN HARDEE
Ike Quebec And John Hardee - The Complete Blue Note Forties Recordings Of Ike Quebec And John Hardee [1990] (3 x CDs)
This 3CD box set from Mosaic Records, released in 1990, is a deep, smoky dive into the Blue Note vaults, an era when swing was loosening its collar and bebop was just starting to stir. The Complete Blue Note Forties Recordings Of Ike Quebec And John Hardee doesn’t shout, it smolders. And for collectors chasing the soulful, pre-hard bop tenor sound, this one’s a goldmine.
Ike Quebec’s tone is the star here, warm, breathy, and unhurried. His work with the Swingtet and Swing Seven is full of subtle fire, especially on tracks like “Facin’ the Face,” “Basically Blue,” and “Zig Billion.” These aren’t jukebox hits, they’re mood pieces, cut for 78s but built to last. Quebec’s phrasing is bluesy without being blunt, romantic without slipping into syrup. You hear the roots of soul jazz forming in real time.
John Hardee, often overlooked, brings a lighter touch but no less depth. “River Edge Rock” and “Hardee’s Partee” (both master and alternate takes) are tight, swinging affairs with a relaxed confidence. His tone is clean, his lines melodic, and his ensembles, especially the Sextet sides, are crisp and conversational.
The real gems? The alternate takes and unissued masters. These aren’t just filler, they’re windows into the studio process. You hear ideas stretch, solos shift, and arrangements breathe. Quebec’s “Blue Harlem” appears in both 10" and 12" 78 versions, offering subtle contrasts in feel and fidelity. And the inclusion of Tiny Grimes, Denzil Best, and Shadow Wilson across sessions adds rhythmic depth without overpowering the horns.
This isn’t a flashy set, it’s a slow burn. A document of two tenor voices carving out space in a changing jazz landscape. For Blue Note devotees, this box is a bridge between the label’s boogie roots and its hard bop future. For anyone tracing the lineage from swing to soul, this box is essential listening. (B)

Thanks Butterboy for another nice jazz set.
ReplyDeleteHi Bob Mac.
DeleteAlways a pleasure to share another slice of jazz history.
I have always enjoyed Ike Quebec's talent.
These sets are meant to keep the spirit alive and bring a little warmth to the day.
Cheers.
This looks like a great set, and I look forward to listening to them.
ReplyDeleteThanks,
mike M
Hi Mike.
DeleteIt’s one of those collections that rewards a close listen, with plenty of depth tucked inside.
Hope it brings you many hours of enjoyment.
Cheers.
This transitory phase/face of jazz had never much caught my attention before (except for some scattered Miles Davis Quintet tracks) - this set will surely open a lot more doors. Many thanks, BB, and Best: TC
ReplyDeleteHi TC.
DeleteThat transitional moment in jazz often slips under the radar, but it’s full of subtle shifts and fresh ideas. Sets like this really do open doors, showing how the music was reshaping itself in real time.
Best wishes back to you.
Cheers.
Hello: Ike Q is one of my favorite Blue note artists and is very under rated. I usually listen to albums like Heavy Soul and late output. This collection shows that his signature sound was established early on. Very nice to hear this stuff.
ReplyDeletehi dorfenheimer.
DeleteIke Quebec really does deserve more recognition. His late albums like Heavy Soul show the full bloom of that big‑boned tenor, but this collection makes clear that his warm, breathy phrasing was already firmly in place back in the ’40s.
Cheers.
thanks for this rare one. I do love Ike Quebec. So I should like it. I have not heard his stuff from the 40s. I love that big boned tenor. Webster, Griffin, Lockjaw, Hawkins, and Quebec!
ReplyDeleteHi Joe Pfeiffer.
DeleteIt’s a rare pleasure to hear him carving out that space so early on. Enjoy!
Cheers.
Do you have the Donald Byrd and Pepper Adams Mosaic set. I have most of the purchased CDs and downloads but it would be nice to see it all in one spot.
ReplyDeleteHi Joe Pfeiffer..
DeleteI do have the long out of print Donald Byrd and Pepper Adams Mosaic set. It's a terrific collection, issued The Complete Blue Note Donald Byrd/Pepper Adams Studio Sessions, 5‑CD box. It gathers all their collaborations from 1958-1961, including albums like Off to the Races, Byrd in Hand, Fuego, and The Cat Walk. I will post in the future.
Cheers.
that would be great. I am lookiing forward to it. They made a nice duo together and some of their albums together are classic!
DeleteA wonderful share! Many thanks!!!
