VA - Can You Feel That Beat, Funky 45s & Other Rare Grooves [2016]
Released in 2016 by J&D Records, Can You Feel That Beat, Funky 45s & Other Rare Grooves is a 20-track compilation that dives headfirst into the raw, regional funk underground of the late ’60s and early ’70s. It’s a punchy, floor-ready set that favors grit over gloss, spotlighting obscure 45s that once lit up local dancehalls but never cracked the mainstream.
The collection kicks off with Mickey & The Soul Generation’s “Iron Leg,” a breakbeat classic revered by crate-diggers. Renaldo Domino’s “Let Me Come Within” and Sandy Gaye’s “Watch The Dog That Bring The Bone” follow with deep soul urgency and lyrical bite. The Soul President’s “Get It Right” and Robert Moore’s “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright” bring tight horn arrangements and gospel-infused optimism.
Creations Unlimited’s “Corruption Is The Thing” and Boscoe’s “Money Won’t Save You” inject political edge, while Duracha’s “Ghet-To Funk” and Black Sunshine’s “The Electric Skunk” lean into psychedelic funk territory. Joyce Williams’ “The First Thing I Do In The Morning” and Pearl Dowell’s “Good Things” offer rare female-led grooves, adding emotional range to the set.
The compilation is cleanly mastered but retains the analog warmth of its source material. Many tracks were originally pressed in tiny batches on regional labels, making this a vital rescue mission for funk archivists. It’s not just a groove sampler, it’s a curated snapshot of America’s deep funk heartbeat, where every track carries the sweat of the dancefloor and the soul of the streets. (B)
