Iannis Xenakis was a Greek‑French composer, architect and mathematician whose work reshaped the possibilities of twentieth‑century music. Born in 1922, he survived war, exile and injury before settling in Paris, where he worked with Le Corbusier while developing a radical new approach to sound. Xenakis treated music as physical material shaped by mathematical processes, drawing on probability theory, set theory and architectural thinking to create structures that felt monumental in scale. His early electroacoustic pieces, including Diamorphoses and Concret PH, reveal his fascination with density, transformation and the sculptural qualities of noise.

Across the 1960s and 1970s, Xenakis expanded his vision through the Polytopes, immersive environments combining light, architecture and electronic sound. Works such as Persepolis and La Légende d’Eer remain defining examples of large‑scale electroacoustic composition. In later years he embraced computer‑generated sound, creating algorithmic works like Gendy 3 and S.709 that pushed electronic music into new territory. Xenakis died in 2001, but his influence continues to grow, sustained by careful reissues that preserve the clarity and intensity of his groundbreaking creations.

This 5-CD Timpani collection gathers the complete orchestral cycle Xenakis recorded with the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg under Arturo Tamayo, documented across sessions from 2000 to 2006 and issued as a unified box set in 2009. It presents the full span of his orchestral imagination, from the explosive breakthroughs of the 1950s to the monumental late works of the 1980s and early 1990s. The set feels like an architectural survey, each disc revealing a different phase of a composer who shaped sound through mathematics, engineering and lived experience.

The early works on the final disc, including Metastaseis, Pithoprakta, Achorripsis and Syrmos, show Xenakis’s language forming in real time. Glissandi rise and fall like mechanical sirens, clusters expand and contract with physical force, and the orchestra becomes a single mass in motion. These pieces remain among the most radical orchestral statements of the twentieth century. The middle discs trace his mature voice. Jonchaies, Antikhthon, Shaar and Lichens reveal vast planes of strings, winds and percussion shaped with precision. The piano concertos Synaphaï and Erikhthon add another dimension, the soloist cutting through the ensemble with lines that feel carved rather than played. The late works, often described as monolithic, gain clarity in Tamayo’s readings, their heavy blocks of sound placed with intention rather than weight.

Across all five discs, the Luxembourg players meet the demands of Xenakis’s scores with discipline and intensity. Interpretations are exact and unflinching, allowing the architecture of his writing to emerge with clarity. The mastering preserves the grain of the recordings without smoothing their edges. As a whole, the box set stands as the most complete portrait of Xenakis’s orchestral world, a place where mathematics becomes motion and the orchestra becomes an engine of elemental force. (B)
