FOLK
VA - The Only Folk Collection You'll Ever Need [2014] (2 x CDs)
Shout! Factory’s The Only Folk Collection You’ll Ever Need offers a clear survey of folk’s most enduring voices, arranged across two discs that trace the tradition from early commercial recordings to the height of the revival. The set moves through the places where folk was shaped, from Appalachian harmony to blues‑rooted storytelling and the polished arrangements that carried these songs into wider audiences.
The first disc begins with The Carter Family’s Can the Circle Be Unbroken, a foundation stone of American folk harmony. Lead Belly’s Rock Island Line and Woody Guthrie’s This Land Is Your Land anchor the disc with rhythm and plainspoken melody. The Stanley Brothers bring Appalachian intensity, while The Weavers’ Goodnight, Irene shows how folk entered the mainstream. Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Dave Van Ronk and Peter, Paul & Mary add the textures of blues, urban folk and early protest song.
The second disc shifts into the 1960s, when folk became a vehicle for new songwriting and social reflection. Phil Ochs’ I Ain’t Marching Anymore sets the tone, followed by The Byrds’ Mr. Tambourine Man and Pete Seeger’s live If I Had a Hammer. Joan Baez, Gordon Lightfoot and Fairport Convention close the set with quieter, introspective performances that link British and American traditions.
Together, these recordings form an accessible portrait of folk’s essential voices and the songs that travelled far. (B)

ReplyDeleteHi Done4it.
DeleteIt's a lovely set. I hope you continue to enjoy it.
Cheers.
A nice collection, but the title is a bit exaggerated. Only 3 of the tracks are from outside North America.
