Eddie Cochran - Somethin' Else [2009] (8 x CD's)

EDDIE COCHRAN

Eddie Cochran - Somethin' Else [2009] (8 x CD's)

All vocal recordings by Eddie Cochran, whether as a solo artist or member of the Cochran Brothers, including his timeless hits, Twenty Flight Rock, and Somethin' Else! Some out-takes are also included! A killer selection from Eddie's instrumental and experimental recordings! Demos, live recordings, and interviews! A selection of Eddie Cochran's work as a session guitarist.  It's astonishing to think that when Ray Edward Cochran was taken from us in a freak car accident while on tour in England in April 1960 - he was only 6 months into his 22nd year and had already clocked up over 200 recordings - the bulk of which are presented in this eagerly awaited and sumptuous box set... For US fans there's the first 3 singles on Ekko as The Cochran Brothers, the lone 7" on Crest, the 14 that followed on Liberty (A&B for each) and the 3 Liberty albums proper from 1957, 1960 and 1962. For UK fans there's the 13 London singles followed by the 10 Liberty ones and the 4 important albums - "Singin' To My Baby" (1958), "The Eddie Cochran Memorial Album" (1960), "Cherished Memories" (1962) and "My Way" (1964). I've checked and they're ALL on here.(Amazon)

Eddie Cochran didn't record all that long, but his legacy is formidable. A mere 21 years old when he died in a car accident in 1960, Cochran recorded one of the iconic songs of the 20th century with "Summertime Blues," a song that captured the rock & roll attitude better than almost any one single, but he wasn't just image: he had a set of songs that were funny, vibrant, and alive, at their best holding their own with Chuck Berry's teenage vignettes, brought to life by his inventive recordings where he pioneered the overdubbing of guitars and use of studio space, opening up the sound of records, suggesting sounds and possibilities in a way rivaled only by Buddy Holly. Like his friend Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran wound up defining the very essence of rockabilly for countless listeners, his sound and stance echoing throughout the decades, from the Beatles to the Stray Cats and beyond. And he did this all with a body of songs that number no greater than 50.

With such a small canon of work, the question of whether he can sustain such a mammoth complete recordings box set as Bear Family's 2009 set Somethin' Else: The Ultimate Collection does arise. The answer winds up being a surprising, resounding yes, for like all the best Bear Family boxes, Somethin' Else thrives by presenting a context for Eddie's work. Certainly, context is what Bear Family offers here -- along with excellent remastered sound and superb liner notes -- to the legions of Cochran diehards, because all of his recorded work, including live sets, has been previously excavated. Any diehard will be familiar with every note here, which may be a detriment for those willing to spend over 200 dollars on a box set, but again, it's the context that makes Somethin' Else feel like something special. It traces Eddie's career through his early country beginning as part of the Cochran Brothers, through his earliest Elvis impressions, then through the explosion of hits in the late '50s. As the studio recordings run out, the set charges through the live radio and TV recordings (some punctuated by on-air interviews), and all of a sudden the familiar songs are given a freshness through these live performances, as Cochran's steady-growing confidence and charisma soon turn overpowering. Then, the set adds an appendix of sideman sessions from Eddie, split equally between rockabilly and country, all proof of his range and possibility. Ultimately, that's the power of this exceptional set: it suggests how much Eddie Cochran could have done without ever diminishing what he did achieve. (AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine)

  2. These songs are so short they're proto-punk. You've done it again, BB! If I may ask, what state or country are you in? I live in Phoenix, Arizona, where it's already hit 100 F this year and we'll probably have a high of about 120 this summer. Cheers, Steve

    1. Hi Steve,
Yes these songs are amazing when presented this way. Bear have done a terrific job.
I live in Australia , its 75F for most of the week (a little warmer than normal). Where I live our summer was around 90 on average so we spend more time outside than inside. Cheers

    2. We actually had some winter nights that hit freezing, which it hadn't done in years. On really bad summer nights it doesn't drop below 100. We were- by our standards, of course- very wet from October to February. That said, it won't be unusual for us to have light rain some summer day and the newscaster will inform us "That was our first rain in 96 days." Ugh

  5. More than brilliant Butterboy, and many thanks. I saw Eddie on that fateful last tour in 1960 at the Finsbury Park Empire (which was only a few days before his death in the car crash). Also on that show was the wonderful Gene Vincent. Memories are hazy, but the music is embedded on the brain forever. Cheers :-)

    1. Hi Man
That would have been a blow when you heard he was killed.
I had just seen Link Wray in concert and he was gracious enough to sign my ticket stubs, I was super happy, then shortly after he died, I felt awful for a long time.
      Thanks for sharing the memories.

  10. Hi - I started listening to this box yesterday and coincidentally today would have been Eddie's 84th birthday. It's all wonderful stuff. I, too, am having a problem with disc 5, track 8. The previously posted Zippyshare link comes up empty and in the download of part 2 it duplicates the mono track from an earlier disc. Anyway to add it somewhere in with the already existing downloads? Thanks very much for all you do and provide.
