SUPER MELLOW SOUL
VA - Super Mellow Soul Collector's Edition (A Butterboy Compilation) (5 x CDs) + PDF Booklet
What exactly is Super Mellow Soul? For me, it isn't simply slow soul music, romantic ballads or quiet storm classics. Super Mellow Soul is a feeling. It's that moment when the day begins to fade, the world slows down and a great record seems to understand exactly where you are.
The idea for this collection came from a desire to gather together songs that share that feeling. Not necessarily the biggest soul hits, nor the rarest records, but recordings that create warmth, intimacy and reflection. Songs that unfold gently and reveal their beauty over time.
Across these five discs, the music follows a natural journey. It begins with Twilight Arrivals, where artists such as Terry Callier, The Notations and Linda Jones establish the mood with records that feel personal and inviting. City Lights moves deeper into the evening, bringing together some of soul music's most comforting and elegant performances. After Midnight forms the emotional heart of the collection, exploring love, longing, memory and devotion through artists such as Donny Hathaway, Dorothy Moore, Willie Hutch and Smokey Robinson. First Light brings resolution and warmth, opening with Minnie Riperton's uplifting "Les Fleurs" and closing with The O'Jays' fittingly titled "Sunshine".
Every track was chosen with the overall journey in mind. Many famous songs were considered and left behind. Many lesser-known recordings earned their place because they captured the mood more completely. This collection is not built around chart success or rarity. It is built around atmosphere.
Collectors will discover a mixture of cherished classics and hidden gems, all carefully sequenced to create a listening experience that feels cohesive from beginning to end.
The fifth disc, My Dream Bonus Disc, extends that journey even further. It was never intended to be a collection of leftovers or near misses. Instead, it serves as a companion to the main set, exploring a few more corners of the Super Mellow Soul landscape. Here, beloved favourites sit comfortably alongside overlooked treasures, extending the mood long after the journey of the four main discs has ended. From the easy charm of "Ain't Understanding Mellow" and "Take It Slow" to the sophistication of "Golden Lady", "Love Mission" and "I See the Light", these recordings share the same warmth, patience and beauty that define the collection as a whole. Think of it as one final invitation to stay awhile before the lights go out.
Ultimately, Super Mellow Soul is about records that make you want to stay a little longer. Music that comforts rather than overwhelms, records that reward close listening and songs that remain beautiful long after they finish playing.
These tracks are not included because they are rare. They are included because they are beautiful. (B)

Superb. Thank you BB. This is a hell of a journey. One song follows the other. And it just gets better and better with every single song. You did it again. Cheers.
ReplyDeleteHi StoneRose,
DeleteThank you, that’s wonderful to hear. This set really is a slow‑burn journey, one track easing into the next, each one adding a little more warmth. I’m glad it kept building for you all the way through.
Cheers.
