His originals, like Antabus and Backstairs/LTD, show how naturally he could build a tune around rhythm and mood.

The quartet is the key. George Cables brings clarity and lift, shaping harmonies that open doors for Dexter’s phrasing. Rufus Reid’s bass lines move with quiet authority, grounding the long performances. Eddie Gladden drives everything forward with crisp, responsive drumming. Together, they create a sound that feels both muscular and elegant, a perfect frame for Dexter’s voice.

The second and third discs deepen the picture. Extended readings of The Panther, Tangerine, Come Rain or Come Shine, Body and Soul and As Time Goes By reveal a band comfortable with long arcs.
