GOTH DIVAS

VA - Dressed in Black, Goth Divas from the Dark Side 1941-2025 [2026]

Dressed in Black traces a lineage of dark‑toned female expression that stretches across eight decades, gathering voices who shaped the moodier corners of pop, rock and avant‑garde music. What makes the set compelling is its sweep: from Billie Holiday’s haunted elegance to Diamanda Galás’ operatic intensity, from Siouxsie Sioux’s icy authority to Anna Calvi’s modern, fire‑lit drama. Each track feels like a chapter in a long story about women who turned shadow into art.

The compilation moves confidently through eras. Judy Henske, Bobbie Gentry and Shirley Collins bring folk‑rooted storytelling where death, mystery and moral weight sit close to the surface. Julie Driscoll’s Season of the Witch stretches into psychedelic ritual, while Lydia Lunch and Anita Lane push toward raw emotional exposure. Cocteau Twins and Nico add dreamlike detachment, their voices floating above guitars and drones like ghosts refusing to fade.

What ties these artists together isn’t genre but atmosphere. Each performance carries a sense of the nocturnal — songs built on tension, longing, danger, or quiet defiance. The sequencing makes the connections feel natural, showing how “darkness” in music can be theatrical, intimate, political or simply beautiful.

For collectors, it’s a rare panoramic view of the goth impulse before and beyond goth itself. For listeners, it’s a journey through voices that found power in the shadows. (B)
