PAUL McCARTNEY

Paul McCartney - Beautiful Junk, Paul McCartney Deep Cuts (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3

Sir James Paul McCartney CH MBE (born 18 June 1942) is an English singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and composer. He gained worldwide fame as the bass guitarist and singer for the rock band the Beatles, widely considered the most popular and influential group in the history of popular music. His songwriting partnership with John Lennon remains the most successful in history. After the group disbanded in 1970, he pursued a solo career and formed the band Wings with his first wife, Linda, and Denny Laine.  McCartney is one of the most successful composers and performers of all time. More than 2,200 artists have covered his Beatles song "Yesterday", making it one of the most covered songs in popular music history. Wings' 1977 release "Mull of Kintyre" is one of the all-time best-selling singles in the UK.  A two-time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as a member of the Beatles in 1988, and as a solo artist in 1999), and an 18-time Grammy Award winner, McCartney has written, or co-written, 32 songs that have reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and as of 2009 he had 25.5 million RIAA-certified units in the United States. McCartney, Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr all received appointment as Members of the Order of the British Empire in 1965 and, in 1997, McCartney was knighted for services to music. McCartney is also one of the wealthiest musicians in the world, with an estimated net worth of US$1.2 billion. (Wikipedia)

Its so easy to miss a lot of Paul McCartney's great tracks as he has been so prolific and has had many bigger hits throughout his career either solo or with Wings.
Here are my favorite deep cuts from his catalogue presented in somewhat chronological order. Tracklist 1 & 2 are predominately solo McCartney with a few exceptions and Tracklist 3 are only Paul McCartney & Wings deep cut tracks. Hope you enjoy a closer look at some of these deeper cuts.

JAMAICAN MUSIC

VA - Story of Jamaican Music (Tougher Than Tough) [1993] (4 x CDs)

A superlative introduction to the world of Jamaican music, Tougher Than Tough is a treasure trove of information, filled with unforgettable music. Across four discs and 95 songs, this set spans the entire history of the island's vibrant music scene, hitting all the major stylistic bases along the way, and rounding up many of Jamaica's greatest artists. It's evident that a great amount of thoughtful time and effort went into this package and, although collectors will howl at the many omissions and some of the selections, this set wasn't intended for them, but for a general audience interested in beginning to explore the music more deeply. With that in mind, the package includes a lushly illustrated 65-page booklet written by Steve Barrow (author of The Rough Guide to Reggae), who provides an exceptionally lucid historical overview. The rest of the booklet offers information on every track, including producer, composer, and release date. The music itself is sequenced chronologically, allowing the listener to chart the myriad of stylistic changes over the years. Disc one begins in 1958 with the Folkes Brothers' "Oh Carolina," arguably the first ever proto-ska release, cut during producer Prince Buster's first ever recording session. It continues through the rise of pure ska and through the shift to rocksteady. Disc two concentrates on the reggae years and the rise of the DJs, while the third is given over entirely to roots. The final disc brings things bang up to date, following the trajectory of the dancehalls. The set comes full circle with the final track, Shaggy's smash hit cover of "Oh Carolina." From rude reggae to ragga, dulcet vocal groups to dueling DJs, The Story of Jamaican Music is indeed just that. Of course, there's a wealth of equally masterful music that didn't make the cut, and the booklet discusses a multitude of songs not included. But this is history 101; hopefully, students will continue their studies on their own.  (AllMusic Review by Jo-Ann Greene)

VA - Rock on Headphones + VA - Headphones, A Lighter Side (A Butterboy Compilation)

HEADPHONES

VA - Rock on Headphones + VA - Headphones, A Lighter Side (A Butterboy Compilation)

Headphones can prevent other people from hearing the sound, either for privacy or to prevent disturbing others, as in listening in a public library. They can also provide a level of sound fidelity greater than loudspeakers of similar cost.

Using headphones for listening to music offers the listener a deeply immersive experience. Through a pair of headphones, you can enjoy connecting with a beloved song (or discovering a new one) in a very intimate way, enjoying every nuance of the sound while feeling cut off from the rest of the world. This indeed can be a special experience. Music and emotion are intimately connected, and this is heightened when I use headphones.

When no one else can hear, it’s just you and your music. It feels a bit like having a soundtrack to your life. As you ride the train, or go jogging, or walk-through town, you’ve got your own music setting the mood and determining the rhythm.

I don't want to debate if music sound best, through headphones or speakers (or in fact the experience seeing and listening to a live performance and the sensation of the bass thumping in your chest while the walls rattle around you), because that is not my objective here. Here I am simply sharing with you sounds that please me when listing to my music through headphones. When I listen to music using my headphones, I hear it completely differently to when I listen to music through speakers. The distance of sound from my ears is so small that I feel the music is IN my head. I close my eyes and there are no distractions. It could be psychological phenomenon, but I truly feel better every time.

Enjoy this selection of tunes I feel are better when listening with headphones.

PETE SEEGER

Pete Seeger - American Favorite Ballads Volumes 1-5 [2013] (5 x CD's)

These songs have been part of the fabric of America for a half century or more-and these five volumes of folk ballads recorded by Pete in the '50s and '60s were an integral part of our folk revival. Here are all 139 folk ballads on 5 CDs, each with its own booklet full of extensive notes; legendary songs and performances abound: John Henry; Clementine; Goodnight Irene; Yankee Doodle; Old Dan Tucker; Hole in the Bucket; This Land Is Your Land; America the Beautiful; Midnight Special; Froggie Went A-Courtin'; Boll Weevil; Erie Canal; Arkansas Traveler, and more!

Pete Seeger began singing, playing the banjo, and collecting folk music in the mid-1930s¯and has continued doing so into the 21st century. His life encompasses the social upheavals and transformations of much of the 20th century, while his peace anthems and songs of struggle and hope thread through our national soundtrack. They are as often sung by schoolchildren as by activists at peace and environmental rallies. Even in his late eighties, he inspires people across generations, cultures, and nations. Moses Asch founded Folkways Records in 1948 to document folk music and other sounds from around the world. Considering these to be educational as well as entertaining, yet aware of their limited commercial appeal, he directed his sales towards libraries and schools. Pete Seeger's five-volume series American Favorite Ballads (recorded 1957-1962), comprised of classic songs from the American experience that adults and children could sing together, formed a cornerstone for Asch's primary audience. Pete Seeger recorded 38 albums for Folkways between 1950 and 1964.  The Smithsonian Institution acquired Folkways from the Asch estate in 1987; Asch's emphasis on the educational nature of Folkways recordings comported perfectly with the Institution's mandate, the "increase and diffusion of knowledge." The year 2008 marks the 60th anniversary of Folkways and the 20th anniversary of Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. We are pleased to honor Pete Seeger's life and legacy through this reissue and continue our commitment to preserve and expand Asch's "encyclopedia of sound," thus keeping it available for current and future generations of listeners.  (Amazon)

Humble Pie - Performance, Rockin' the Filmore - The Complete Recordings [2013] (4 x CD's)

HUMBLE PIE

Humble Pie - Performance, Rockin' the Filmore - The Complete Recordings [2013] (4 x CD's)

One of the world's greatest live albums is now four times greater!  When Steve Marriott left the Small Faces (Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2012) to launch a new band in 1968, expectations were high. Marriott teamed with 18-year-old guitarist Peter Frampton, already a U.K. star through his work with The Herd, along with bassist Greg Ridley from Spooky Tooth, and 17-year-old drummer Jerry Shirley, who Steve Marriott had used as a session player for Andrew Loog Oldham s Immediate Record Label. Humble Pie recorded four albums and several singles before achieving its U.S. breakthrough with their 1971 the double-live set Performance: Rockin' the Fillmore. Drawn from four shows played over two consecutive nights at Bill Graham's legendary Fillmore East, Performance captured a red-hot band firing on all cylinders, distilling the crowd-pleasing heavy blues-rock style that had come to dominate the Brit foursome's repertoire, and which would help to lay the foundation for the sound that would soon become known as heavy metal. Performance caught on in a big way with American listeners, hitting #21 on the U.S. album chart and becoming the Pie s first gold album. Now, for the first time, Omnivore Recordings has gathered all four shows from Humble Pie's historic Fillmore East stand in this lovingly packaged four-CD box set. No editing or resequencing just the four sets as they were played on May 28 and 29, 1971. The seven tracks that comprised the original album are joined here by 15 previously unissued performances including the never-before-heard complete first set from May 28!  You may not need no doctor, but you do need Humble Pie's Performance: Rockin' the Fillmore, The Complete Recordings. VA - Voodoo Voodoo, Feisty Fifties Females [2014] (3 x CDs)

FEISTY FIFTIES FEMALES

VA - Voodoo Voodoo, Feisty Fifties Females [2014] (3 x CDs)

Compiled by R&B and rock & roll authority Dave Penny Voodoo Voodoo pays tribute to the distaff side of 1950s R&B music that would inform the rock n roll explosion of the latter half of the decade, from the last shout of the 1940s big band thrushes such as Ella Johnson and Dinah Washington, through the fearsome vocal power of the likes of R&B trailblazers such as Big Maybelle, Ruth Brown, LaVern Baker and Big Mama Thornton, to the early experiments of the mainstream pop singers such as Ella Mae Morse, Kay Starr and Peggy Lee. That ages old question, who cut the first rock n roll record? will never be answered as the style evolved over several years, and in any case, everyone has their own idea of what constitutes rock n roll. By contrast the question, who was the first white performer to successfully utilise the black R&B style and mould it into a sound that could convincingly be labelled rock n roll? sounds more straightforward: surely it was Elvis Presley or Bill Haley? But was it? There is a compelling argument that the women beat the men to the punch when it came to assimilating black music for white consumption in the 1950s and while it might not have been the TKO that history tells us was delivered by Presley or Haley, it was still a mighty blow that deserves to be better documented. Indeed, rather than the black vocal harmony groups that originated Fool, Fool, Fool and Money Honey, it is now suggested that Elvis was influenced to record these songs in his early years from the cover versions by Kay Starr and Ella Mae Morse... So, prepare yourself for a whole lot of rhythm and rock from the feisty females on Voodoo Voodoo, a compilation that is happy to embrace singers from across a range of styles - R&B, big band and pop - just so long as they deliver the goods vocal-wise. Ice water at the ready! It's a hot one, were tellin ya! (Amazon)
