The subtitle of the four-disc box set The Doings is The Solo Years, and the 86-track compilation never once strays from that edict. Disc one kicks off with Nick Lowe's seminal single "So It Goes," bypassing his early work with Brinsley Schwarz. By the end of that first disc, the compilation is already at Nick the Knife, his first album after the disbandment of Rockpile, and none of that group's official recordings are here. As it stands, The Doings falls just below the definitive mark, mainly because of those omissions. It's still a worthwhile set, though, playing much like an expanded version of Basher. It could be argued that it moves a little too quickly through Lowe's '70s and '80s material, especially since the third disc contains almost all of his '90s albums Impossible Bird and Dig My Mood. Then again, those two records really are among the best music he's ever made, so they deserve such an elevated position. Still, such decisions help point out what's missing from The Doings, and there are some great songs not included, but that's nit-picking. What's here is excellent, tracing a good history of Nick's solo career, perfect for casual fans wanting a comprehensive anthology. But The Doings is really for obsessive fans, and they'll be pleased by the rarities. Not only is the original fast version of "Cruel to Be Kind" here, but there's a full disc of live recordings, demos, and home recordings, all of high quality. Not only does The Doings do a good job of collecting obscurities, it does an even better job of drawing a portrait of Lowe's solo recordings. Ultimately, that's what makes The Doings a success. VA - Miles Out to Sea, The Roots of British Power Pop 1969-1975 [2022] (3 x CD's)

Cruising the dusty side streets and forgotten alleyways of rock & roll history, there are all kinds of treasures to be found if one takes a left turn away from the accepted canon whenever possible. Case in point, the brilliant collection Miles Out to Sea: The Roots of British Power Pop 1969-1975, which makes a valiant effort to posit that great pop music didn't just fade away after the Beatles packed it in. The three discs here are jammed with warbly glam rockers, jangling dreamers, introspective piano pushers, melodic hard rockers, tuneful oddballs, and radio-friendly gumdroppers, all looking for that rousing moment when a cascading melody, plangent vocal, and trilling vocal harmony cuddle up next to a little bit of power -- maybe a flashing guitar riff, a thudding drumbeat, or some booming bass -- and make magic happen. Some of the alchemists here are well-known, like the Kinks with their moody rocker "This Man He Weeps Tonight," the Move with the hyperactive "Chinatown," and the Who, who teeter on the far edge of the pop-to-power scale on "In a Hand or a Face." Of course, Badfinger, the band who are the poster children for this whole enterprise, shine with the painfully pretty ballad "Know One Knows." Scattered across the rest of the set are fun surprises, too. Who knew Slade could write a melancholy melody with the song that gave the collection its name or that Iain Matthews ("So Sad [No Love of His Own]") went to Ridgemont High with Jackson Browne?

The best thing about comps like this is discovering acts who were unjustly lost to time, and there are plenty of them here. A short list of winners has to include Shakane's glimmering cover of Neil Young's "When You Dance I Can Really Love," Liverpool Echo's lovely Merseybeat/folk-rock hybrid "Girl on the Train," Neil Harrison's so-George-it-hurts "Bicycle Driver," and Stray's ripping rocker "Alright Ma!" Most incredible of the lost gems is Pagliaro's "Some Sing, Some Dance," a song that takes full advantage of the era's anything-goes ethos and comes up with pop music at its most breathtaking. A few names that rate a little high on the familiarity scale do drop by with some gems as well: Stealers Wheel add some funk to their strum on the delightfully loose "Go as You Please," a pre-prog Barclay James Harvest turn in the nifty mod groover "Good Love Child," and who in their right mind could resist the sunny delight of First Class and "Beach Baby"? Or Rocking Horse's "Biggest Gossip in Town"? This is just a partial listing of the treats that await travelers willing to set aside history and do a little off-road exploring, a task made easy by the effort and care put into Miles Out to Sea by the genius crew of spelunkers who make up the staff at Grapefruit. Long may they dig when the results are as glittering and golden as these. (AllMusic review by Tim Sendra)

Larry Young, one of the most significant jazz organists to emerge after the rise of Jimmy Smith, is heard on this limited-edition six-CD set at the peak of his creativity. Formerly available as nine LPs, the set includes the original Larry Young albums Into Somethin', Unity, Of Love and Peace, Contrasts, Heaven on Earth, and Mother Ship, while drawing from the compilations 40 Years of Jazz, The History of Blue Note (Dutch), The World of Jazz Organ (Japanese), and The Blue Note 50th Anniversary Collection Volume Two: The Jazz Message, and also including guitarist Grant Green's Talkin' About, Street of Dreams, and I Want to Hold Your Hand. Young was still very much under Smith's influence on the first four sessions released as Talkin' About, Into Somethin', Street of Dreams, and I Want to Hold Your Hand (all featuring a trio with Green and drummer Elvin Jones plus guests Sam Rivers or Hank Mobley on tenor and vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson). However, starting with the monumental Unity session (a quartet outing with Joe Henderson on tenor, trumpeter Woody Shaw, and Jones), Young emerged as a very advanced and original stylist in his own right. Young's final four dates (Of Love and Peace, Contrasts, Heaven on Earth, and Mother Ship) are generally pretty explorative and feature such notable sidemen as altoist James Spaulding and Byard Lancaster, guitarist George Benson, and trumpeter Lee Morgan along with some forgotten local players. Only one compilation per week from each contributor with a limit of 25 tracks per track list per submission. (Total 25 tracks only). You can submit a new track list the following week.

The Topic is your choice, Genre is your choice, and any music is acceptable. (If readers don't like the topic or choices then they don't have to pick them up)

 When presenting your submission, the Topic of your compilation should be Noted as well as the sound quality of the compilation. (ie 320Kbps MP3, Flac, etc.).

Whilst most would prefer MP3's @ 320 kbps all I request is a good sound quality. 

A track list must be supplied together with a LINK for your Compilation.  (Please do not send the compressed file)

Artwork is not necessary but would be welcomed. All submissions need to arrive via email to:
