PSYCHEDELIC ROCK

VA - Psychedelic Rock Is In My Head (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3

Psychedelic rock is a diverse style of rock music inspired, influenced, or representative of psychedelic culture, which is centered around perception-altering hallucinogenic drugs. Psychedelic rock is intended to replicate and enhance the mind-altering experiences of psychedelic drugs, most notably LSD. Many psychedelic groups differ in style, and the label is often used indiscriminately.

Originating in the mid-1960s among British and American musicians, the sounds of psychedelic rock invokes three core effects of LSD: depersonalization, dechronicization, and dynamization; all of which detach the user from reality. Musically, the effects may be represented via novelty studio tricks, electronic or non-Western instrumentation, disjunctive song structures, and extended instrumental segments. Some of the earlier 1960s psychedelic rock musicians were based in folk, jazz, and the blues, while others showcased an explicit Indian classical influence called "raga rock". In the 1960s, there existed two main variants of the genre: the whimsical British pop-psychedelia and the harder American West Coast acid rock. While "acid rock" is sometimes deployed interchangeably with the term "psychedelic rock", it also refers more specifically to the heavier and more extreme ends of the genre.

The peak years of psychedelic rock were between 1966 and 1969, with milestone events including the 1967 Summer of Love and the 1969 Woodstock Rock Festival, becoming an international musical movement associated with a widespread counterculture before beginning a decline as changing attitudes, the loss of some key individuals and a back-to-basics movement, led surviving performers to move into new musical areas. The genre bridged the transition from early blues and folk-based rock to progressive rock and hard rock, and as a result contributed to the development of sub-genres such as heavy metal. Since the late 1970s it has been revived in various forms of neo-psychedelia. (Wikipedia)

SOUL BALLADS

VA - 50 Great Soul Ballads (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2

A Great Soul Ballad is something very special indeed. It will move you and have you questing your own feelings or just confirm how you may have felt before. The best ones resonate with you because they articulate how you felt at a particular time in life. To me these are life songs with heart.

Here is my stab at some of the greatest Soul Ballads . Each tells a story and offers a reminder of relationships that work or didn't. Some are heartbreaking, some are political, some are fun, but all are Great Soul Songs that are absolutely magical. When Gene Chandler sings "Rainbow" you want to cry. His feelings are amplified by his beautiful voice and vocal styling (and of course the music). And again When Rene Geyer sings James Brown's "It's A Man's Man's World". Just fantastic. So many great soul ballads here.

As usual there are so many songs to choose from that would fit into this comp. These are the ones that resonate with me. Enjoy!

COVER SONGS

VA - 50 Best Cover Songs (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2

There's nothing better than hearing a great musician's fresh take on a classic song.

In popular music, a cover version, cover song, or simply cover, is a new performance or recording by someone other than the original artist or composer of a previously recorded, commercially released song.

Before the onset of rock 'n' roll in the 1950s, songs were published and several records of a song might be brought out by singers of the day, each giving it their individual treatment. Cover versions could also be released as an effort to revive the song's popularity among younger generations of listeners after the popularity of the original version has long since declined over the years.

The term "cover" goes back decades when cover version originally described a rival version of a tune recorded to compete with the recently released (original) version. The Chicago Tribune described the term in 1952: "trade jargon meaning to record a tune that looks like a potential hit on someone else's label". Examples of records covered include Paul Williams' 1949 hit tune "The Hucklebuck" and Hank Williams' 1952 song "Jambalaya". Both crossed over to the popular Hit Parade and had numerous hit versions. Before the mid-20th century, the notion of an original version of a popular tune would have seemed slightly odd – the production of musical entertainment was seen as a live event, even if it was reproduced at home via a copy of the sheet music, learned by heart or captured on a gramophone record. In fact, one of the principal objects of publishing sheet music was to have a composition performed by as many artists as possible.

In previous generations, some artists made very successful careers of presenting revivals or reworkings of once-popular tunes, even out of doing contemporary cover versions of current hits. Musicians now play what they call "cover versions" (the reworking, updating or interpretation) of songs as a tribute to the original performer or group. Using familiar material (such as evergreen hits, standard tunes or classic recordings) is an important method of learning music styles. Until the mid-1960s most albums, or long playing records, contained a large number of evergreens or standards to present a fuller range of the artist's abilities and style. Artists might also perform interpretations ("covers") of a favorite artist's hit tunes for the simple pleasure of playing a familiar song or collection of tunes. A cover band plays such "cover versions" exclusively. (Wikpedia)

VA - 40 Smooth As Butter Jazz Tracks (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2

SMOOTH JAZZ

Smooth Jazz is an outgrowth of fusion, one that emphasizes its polished side. Generally, smooth jazz relies on rhythms and grooves instead of improvisation. There are often layers of synthesizers, lite-funk rhythms, lite-funk bass, elastic guitars, and either trumpets, alto, or soprano saxophones. The music isn't cerebral, like hard bop, nor is it gritty and funky like soul-jazz or groove -- it is unobtrusive, slick, and highly polished, where the overall sound matters more than the individual parts. etc. etc.

"Smooth As Butter Jazz Tracks" is filled with the smoothest jazz sounds that I put on whenever I am chilling out. I have included tracks where you can drift away with or simply be transported to another peace of mind. Typically, you would not find vocals on such an album, but I have included a few vocal tracks here because they move me and because they are so smooth... I hope you like the mix of flavors and tastes of these beauties.

VA - Bubble Gum Festival (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2

BUBBLEGUM

VA - Bubble Gum Festival (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2

Bubblegum pop (also known as bubblegum music or simply bubblegum) is a genre of pop music with an upbeat sound contrived and marketed to appeal to pre-teens and teenagers, which may be produced in an assembly-line process, driven by producers and often using unknown singers. Bubblegum's classic period ran from 1967 to 1972. A second wave of bubblegum began two years later and ran until 1977 when disco took over and punk rock emerged.

Upon its genesis, bubblegum music was geared at pre-adolescents, something easy to spot by lending an ear to the lyrics. However, removed from their initial context and intentions, the best bubblegum comes across as catchy, funny, endearing songwriting of the finest order. Strange too, like shattered fragments of cartoons you've never seen, torn cardboard pieces from cereal boxes you never tasted. The sheer amount of bubblegum music flooding the market in the 60's makes for intriguing exploration, as do the various styles which fall under it. It wasn't just boyish voices, organs, tambourines and hand-claps, its ramifications bled into psych pop, fairy-tale psych and garage rock, eventually giving way to glam rock.

Here is presented some favorites whilst highlighting how diverse the style could be. Enjoy!
