A comprehensive 78 page booklet plots the story of Cherry Red Records and details many rare 7" and 12" picture sleeves. With eight CDs packed to their last 0s and 1s with independent-minded audio, it’s very difficult to write about this without dribbling all over the typewriter. Featuring A and B-sides of the first 61 singles put out by the influential label, this really is a treasure trove for anyone who’s expressed even a passing interest in punk, post-punk, weirdo misfittery, and sheer willful exuberance.  Some names to toy with: The Tights (who kicked it all off with a run of 2000 copies in 1978) Glaxo Babies, Robert Wyatt. Even George Melly pops up. Atilla The Stockbroker provides street poetry and The Monochrome Set a more arch experience. Breakthrough act Dead Kennedys liven things up with pointed lyrics and trebly, 17-to-the-bar jazz guitar breaks, while Hybrid Kids, Jah Wurzel et al bring us fourth-dimension covers of Kate Bush and Rod Stewart tracks. The sleeve notes are so comprehensive as to be novella-length, which is just as well with 180 songs to soundtrack them. A wonderful celebration, then, and a reminder that a label built largely on artist-friendliness is to be cherished.
