ROCK & ROLL

VA - The Road To Rock & Roll, 1932-1954 [2013-2015] (6 x CDs)

Another success from Fantastic Voyage. This selection of 2 CDs for each of the 3 Volumes, is a great selection of mostly fifties scene jivers and strollers by sometimes some obscure artists of the time.

These tracks really do give an insight into how rock 'n roll evolved from various types of music. Most of the fare on offer here is of the 'non-rockabilly' type, although there are some such items included, but it is none the worse for that. It was rather interesting to hear some reasonably well-known numbers performed by artistes different to the usually heard ones - some were better than others. So, they may not all be the original versions, but these were released (first?) in the UK, on such as Parlophone, Brunswick, MGM, Capitol, Esquire, London etc. All in all, a great compilation with an excellent detailed booklet from the "legendary" Stuart Colman. (Amazon)

I love these compilations, it's a fascinating insight into some of the influences of Rock & Roll, you can hear certain styles and rifts that were carried forward into Rock & Roll. Great stuff if you enjoy 20th century popular music and its evolution. Compiler and music historian Stuart Colman has done a splendid job here, weaving together seemingly disparate artists and genres within whom he identifies a germ of the world-changing sounds to follow. It’s a lively education for the listener, who may feel compelled to check out further delights by more obscure names such as Ella Mae Morse, Buddy Morrow or Smilin’ Joe. (Amazon)

  1. This intriguing set looks like it's going to be a great teacher, *and* soundtrack to Rock's roots - and its size practically ensures enough depth to do the topic genuine justice... and I like seeing plenty of names I don't recognize, so there'll be some nice treats, I'm sure. Thanks, Butter!

  2. I'm sure I will; and the earlier, the better! I just now skimmed it, and want to jump into the deep end this weekend.

I think the mark of a great compilation is the reaction of "Perfect, perfect - and here's one more for it..."

So here's one more for it, one that Fantastic Voyage must have run out of room for, or they definitely would have included: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7CfeFcZo2o

Thick blue roots to the sprawling R&R tree! Elvis Presley, please sit down.

    2. So far I've listened to volume 3 (starting backwards) and it's a really fantastic selection; mostly things I've never heard before, and I'm looking forward to diving into the rest. Compilations like this have a way of leading me down multiple rabbit holes. Thank you so much for your kindness.
