VA - Rock & Folk (Aux Origines Du Rock) [2011] (10x CD's)

AUX ORIGINES DU ROCK

VA - Rock & Folk (Aux Origines Du Rock) [2011] (10x CD's)

An exciting compilation which mixes different genres beyond strict rock'n'roll (Garage Rock, Pop Rock, Rhythm & Blues, Skiffle, Rock & Roll, Blues Rock, Country, Swing, Soul, Vocal, Electric Blues, Jump Blues, Chicago Blues, Big Band, Rockabilly, Doo Wop, Louisiana Blues, Delta Blues, Gospel, Folk, Classic Rock ) and which shows that rock was born in the filiation of all the richness of popular American music .

French Rock and Roll Magazine (founded in 1966) Rock & Folk is no match for English-language publications which flood the market with new compilations every month: although it’s one of the oldest Music magazines available, with the exception a couple of experiment in the 80 they only started releasing cover mounted CD in 2003 at a average rate of 4 or 5 per year; that doesn’t prevent them from releasing some fine compilations and once in a while a doozie like this box set is a positive and pleasant surprise.

A 10 CDs Box/ 200 tracks Rock & Folk aux origines du Rock; these song are such huge classics that it wasn’t to hard to discover the titles I hadn’t recognized; a fine appetizer for those who have money to spent on the Box  with hours of well spent and invigorating moments. It includes the Elvis that mattered, the duck-walking Berry hymn, the infectious vibrations of Cochran, Jerry Lee Lewis, James Brown  or Little Richard, Link Wary’s tremoloed and menacing “Rumble” and  “Guitar” Watson guitar pyrotechnics on a blazing “Space Guitar” the pair of instrumental-only cuts , and among other no less infectious tracks even Johnny Cash is represented, doing a Country/Rockabilly “Big River” full of authority and passion. It is reminder of where it all started. (Amazon)

A great box from France.

  1. Hello,
I started reading "Rock & Folk" in 1968 (#18), the cover caught my eye,
with Julie Driscoll, but it's true that at this time we did not have all the information
in France, magazine like "Creem" or "Rolling Stone" or other US fanzines, I was young
and psych rock was my preference (Hendrix, Quicksilver, Stones and even Michael Bloomfield,
Byrds and the Dylan of "Highway 61 Revisited", the Blues...English! The "Roots" of Rock are
arrived later for me and I listen a lot more now, thanks to your blog of course,
and this compilation is, once again excellent! Merci.
