GIRL GROUPS

VA - Will You Love Me Tomorrow, Girl Group Greats (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3.

A girl group is a music act featuring several female singers who generally harmonize together. The term "girl group" is also used in a narrower sense in the United States to denote the wave of American female pop music singing groups, many of whom were influenced by doo-wop, and which flourished in the late 1950s and early 1960s between the decline of early rock and roll and start of the British Invasion. All-female bands, in which members also play instruments, are usually considered a separate phenomenon. These groups are sometimes called "girl bands" to differentiate, although this terminology is not universally followed.

With the advent of the music industry and radio broadcasting, a number of girl groups emerged, such as the Andrews Sisters. The late 1950s saw the emergence of all-female singing groups as a major force, with 750 distinct girl groups releasing songs that reached US and UK music charts from 1960 to 1966. The Supremes alone held 12 number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 during the height of the wave and throughout most of the British Invasion rivaled the Beatles in popularity.

Girl groups have a wide array of subject matter in their songs, depending on time and place and who was producing. Songs also had a penchant for reflecting the political and cultural climate around them. For instance, songs with abusive undertones were somewhat common during the 1950's -1970's. One notable example was the song "He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss)" by the Crystals. During the "golden age of girl groups", lyrics were disparate, ranging from songs about mean dogs to underage pregnancy. However, common sentiments were also found in ideas like new love, pining after a crush or lover, and heartache. Some songs sounded upbeat or cheerful and sang about falling in love, whereas others took a decidedly more melancholic turn. Groups like the Shangri-Las, with the song "I Can Never Go Home Anymore" sang about the darker side of being in love. (Wikipedia)

So, it should not be surprising that most of the track in this 3 CD compilation were released in the 50's and 60's. Also, there is only one track by each girl group in the 75 selected tracks presented here with the exception of two by the Supremes. Enjoy!

    3. Hi mrRadio,
Because the post appears several times, I have placed a link in this post which takes you to the correct post with the working links. I know it's a little sneaky and confusing, however you will find the new links if you click in the link in this post.
      Cheers.

    4. HA! Well I feel a little stupid with that one... now I know. I would not call that either sneaky or confusing. What threw me off I guess is this is the first set of new links you have sent me in this particular way. I have noticed you recently doing this with other link updates which I was not involved in requesting but did not think about that possibility in this instance. This makes perfect sense to me for you to do your updates like this. For a long time I have noticed that on a re-link or re-post you would sometimes update previous posts (all of them) or sometimes only the last previous post or sometimes not any previous ones. For that reason when I find a dead link I always now, especially one at least a year old, but really always now search for a more recent re-post before notifying you. Indeed, I was aware of the older post in this case because I document the write-up and song lists you provide for all I download, which is everything I can. I've thought about this new way you're doing things before you were doing it but not knowing your exact situation there and what you deal with to keep things organized and update I was not about to try and advise you about how to run your shop. You really are doing quite well at that anyway and it's amazing. I'm sure you're learning as you go and grow, Anyway, had to chuckle a little at the logical thought that keeping the things that change (like links) only in one place was a little sneaky or confusing. Good one! Heartfelt thanks, again and always, for your resourceful curation, care and dedication, knowledge and commitment, respect and involvement, dialogue and support, and everything about this grand space. For those like me who enhance and energize their life thru music exploration, this place is an Oasis. We all hope it will never dry up. Cheers to the power of melody!

Girl Groups are Great again... Long Live All Links!
