Split Enz - Sympathy for Split Enz (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2 REPOST
Split Enz was a rock band from New Zealand that was popular during the late 1970's and early 1980's. It was founded in 1973 by Tim Finn and Phil Judd, and had a variety of other members during its existence. Split Enz had eight songs listed in the APRA Top 100 New Zealand Songs of All Time, more than any other band.
Split Enz had ten albums (including seven studio albums) reach the top ten of the Official New Zealand Music Chart. From 1980 to 1982, the band had four number-one albums in New Zealand and three in Australia. It also had two albums break the top ten of the Canadian Albums Chart, two break the top fifty of the Billboard 200, and one break the top fifty of the UK Albums Chart. The only number-one single for Split Enz was "I Got You" (1980), which topped the charts in both New Zealand and Australia. Other top-ten singles include "One Step Ahead" (1980), "History Never Repeats" (1981), "Dirty Creature" (1982), and "Six Months in a Leaky Boat" (1982). (Wikipedia)
I recall seeing them in concert (as a support Act to a major visiting act who I cant remember) and I was blown away by their originality and magnificent if not a little weird performance. I immediately purchased their album Mental Notes. I have my original copy and 4 more copies which are at various levels of wear. A Great group often underrated.
History Doesn’t Repeat. It just gets better... This is a compilation of my favorite and mostly underrated Split Enz songs.

Would the main act you saw have been Zappa, back in '75? Unforgettable seeing Spit Enz cartwheel across the pitch onto the stage at the WACA in early '75!
ReplyDeleteI don't believe so, radhock.
DeleteIt was in Melbourne.
Cheers.
Never got to see them live, but always enjoyed their records. I have the laser cut album True Colours framed and in my office right now!
ReplyDeleteHi Pol.
DeleteWonderful to watch and hear. I used to be a Slit Enz club member and received many freebies. I had a lot of stuff packed away in storage. I suspect I will be revived one day.
Cheers.
Great stuff, thanks!!!! My knee surgeon here in Boston, who is from NZ, went to med school briefly with Tim Finn!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing that, Jim.
DeleteI always felt Tim Finn was left out of the limelight despite some excellent albums. I say him and his brother Neil together and they were great.
Hope the knee is better.
Cheers.
The first time I saw Split Enz live was at Festival Hall, Melbourne, as support on a bill with AC/DC and Skyhooks. They had just arrived from NZ and were booed off stage. Thankfully they persisted and created some classic music. Always thought they were creative and original.
ReplyDeleteHI Martin Michael.
DeleteWe may very well have been at the same concert. I also saw Split Enz and Sebastion Hardie at the same venue, I believe. They were both great. Enjoy this set of original Split Enz music.
Cheers.
I spent quite some time trying to get a copy of the original vinyl pressing of Mental Notes having had a copy on it's initial release in Australia but as i now live in Cornwall UK the version they call Mental Notes is what I remember being Second Thoughts, the Phil Manzanera produced album. It's not the same by a long shot and much poorer than the original. I ended up with an remastered Australian Festival pressed vinyl of the original and happiness returned. An amazing first album that should not have been messed with. Thank you for the reups as i missed them originally.
ReplyDeleteHi aybsee,
DeleteIt sounds like you went through quite a journey to find the original vinyl pressing of Mental Notes! I can understand the frustration of ending up with Second Thoughts instead, especially when the original holds such a special place in your heart. I’m glad to hear that you finally got your hands on the remastered Australian Festival pressing and that it brought back the happiness you were looking for. The original Mental Notes is indeed an amazing album that shouldn’t have been altered. Thank you for sharing your experience and appreciation for the reups.
Cheers
