MOD JAZZ
VA - The Mod Jazz Series [1996-2018] (8 x CD's)
The Ace/Kent label's ongoing, Mod Jazz series is a fine example of how to construct an intelligent and highly enjoyable batch of anthologies spotlighting rather obscure tracks (and usually rather obscure performers) in a genre that doesn't get a great deal of attention from history books. Showcasing jazz from the 1960s with a good measure of soul (and sometimes some rock, pop, and funk influence), this is the kind of jazz (or at least jazzy material) that's usually more accessible than most to non-jazz specialists, though it doesn't mean jazz-heads of a certain taste can't find it to their liking too. Overall, this is kind of like being able to listen to a crate-digging DJ on a soul-jazz theme night without having to go out to a loud club, and it's unlikely any DJ would have all of this, as many tracks are previously unreleased. (Allmusic)
This is a great primer for newbies to "acid jazz" or anyone who likes jazz influences soul music in this highly successful and critically acclaimed Mod Jazz series that created it's own genre. The Mod Jazz Series that has not only invented and codified a sound, it has made it popular. Jazz that is accessible, touching on its blues, soul and Latin influences while always having a dance-able beat. It includes the super-rare, the well known and the previously unreleased.
The Mod Jazz series has inspired many imitators, but the original is still the best, expertly compiled, it captures the top crossover points between jazz, Latin and R&B. (Amazon)

ReplyDeleteIt's worth the journey, lemonflag.
DeleteCheers.
My Dad loved jazz and built his own speaker cabinets to listen to his music. Bearing in mind this was in the late '50s - early '60s, so the gear available wasn't great. In those days Swing and Trad were king. Got to hear Tuba Skinny the other day; good trad, so this collection will be interesting to browse. Many thanks again.
