SOUL
VA - As We Travel, Folk Funk Flavours & Ambient Soul [2002]
As We Travel, the follow-up to the Harmless label's excellent Make Music comp, may be better than its predecessor, assembling an even more perfectly nuanced collection of spacious, mellow soul cuts from the early '70s. Unified by their acoustic guitars, gently bubbling basslines, and sweetly funky rhythms, these dozen songs come together to create a ravishingly beautiful mood perfect for Sunday morning listening -- the subtitle, Folk Funk Flavours & Ambient Soul, speaks volumes about the scope and effect of the grooves therein. Compiler John Stapleton even achieves a wonderful balance between familiar favorites and relative obscurities, juxtaposing the likes of Shuggie Otis' Strawberry Letter 23 and Funkadelic's Can You Get to That against the little-known Lyn Christopher's Take Me With You -- hell, even erstwhile Brit girl-group queen Sandie Shaw makes an appearance with Your Time Is Gonna Come. lovely thank you. it would be nice to have this groove extended to a 3-hour B-boy set....
ReplyDeleteHi ripley.
DeleteYou're welcome.
It would be a nice challenge. Who knows in the future.
Cheers
Never seen this before and it looks like a great theme and selection. I agree with Ripley that I would be down with an extended B-boy mix of this folk-funk & ambient soul groove. Might be a hard essence to conjure and distill but you've been known to work your alchemy many times before!
ReplyDeleteHi MrDave.
DeleteSome really nice tracks on this well put together compilation.
I have been giving it thought, a possible Extended Edition on its way.
Cheers.
VERY GOOD compilation. The mix is perfect. Bravo!
ReplyDeleteThanks Herve,

Cheers.
this looks great! Unfortunately I keep getting "server overloaded" when I try to DL from KF. Anyone else having this problem?
ReplyDeleteHi Matthew.

I will do. Thank you for everything you do, in any case. Yours is the best music blog on the internet by far.

ReplyDeleteHi Rob M
DeleteGlad you like it.
I don't think I have the first. If I do, I will post it at a later date.
Cheers.
Thanks for this! Just a quick note/question, this seems to be only 11 tracks...missing #10 Nancy Priddy– You've Come This Way Before. Any Chance we can get that track?
ReplyDeleteWow I'm dumb lol. I searched my hard drives and I have this album already...here's the Nancy Priddy Track: https://we.tl/t-s3eWCWhxoz
