CALYPSO

VA - Sounds Of The Caribbean Islands - Calypso, The Authentic Sound From Trinidad & Tobago, A History 1912 - 1962 [2016] (10 x CDs)

When people hear of Calypso today, they just as likely think of the sea nymph in Greek mythology, as of the musical fad of the late 50s to which she lent her name. With his rise to superstardom, especially Harry Belafonte garnered the genre increased attention. In the music assembled in this collection one can easily hear that Belafonte "borrowed" from many of the early performers and that some of his most successful titles had been popular a few years prior to his versions already.

In the early days Calypso was a medium of communication, spreading messages of all kinds - the daily newspaper of the little man in song. Many residents of the "Islands in the Sun" took the contents of these songs, which often dealt with politics and topics of daily life-love, the adversities of fate, sex, lies, and alcohol-, as reliable message. The songs created space for free expression. Over time the music was mostly consumed as pure entertainment, especially in the late 1950s. This 10-CD BOX documents this "Folk music of the Caribbean", which eventually gave rise to Ska and Reggae, from its origins via the highlights of the genre up to the decay of the Calypso boom. (The Intense Media, back cover)

This 202 track box set is a collection of 10 CDs that features various artists and songs from the Calypso genre, which originated in Trinidad and Tobago. Calypso is a style of music that combines West African Kaiso, French Creole, and Caribbean influences, and often features witty and humorous lyrics that comment on social and political issues. The box set covers the history of calypso from 1912 to 1962, and includes some of the most famous and influential calypso singers, such as Lord Kitchener, Mighty Sparrow, Lord Melody, and Harry Belafonte. The box set also contains some rare and obscure recordings, as well as some examples of how calypso influenced other genres, such as rock & roll, folk, and ska. The box set is divided into thematic discs, each with 20 tracks (except CD09 which has 22 with two very rare track included), and has a total running time of about 10 hours. The box set was released in 2016 by The Intense Media, a label that specializes in historical and archival music compilations.  (Amazon)

  3. Thanks for this Butterboy, lots of interesting and historical recordings here. Calypso music didn't really take off much in Australia. As I kid listening to the radio I can recall of couple of popular songs from the late 1950s. "Cindy Oh Cindy" was one, and "Mary Ann", and of course Harry Belafonte, who had a few hits and was probably the biggest of the lot. I believe the Calypso craze was much bigger in the UK, no doubt due to West Indian migration.

    1. Hi Bob Mac.
      You are right.
The closest I came to hearing about Calypso as a you person was the Mango variety. I only got into calypso music because of the UK music scene. It's always fun to listen to.
      Cheers.

    2. Just want to point out Butterboy that CD 10 is a mess, all tracks have incorrect titles, one track (Hank Snow) is there twice. I've done a quick check of the other 9 CDs and they seem OK, just CD 10 is messed up. I've sorted out my copy of CD 10, it now has 18 tracks all correctly titled. Here is a link if anyone is interested: https://pixeldrain.com/u/C6xi6EJG

I thought I fixed that. Obviously not.
