LOU REED

Lou Reed - The Sire Years, Complete Albums Box [2015] (10 x CDs)

Lewis Allan Reed (March 2, 1942 – October 27, 2013) was an American musician and songwriter. He was the guitarist, singer, and principal songwriter for the rock band The Velvet Underground and had a solo career that spanned five decades. Although not commercially successful during its existence, the Velvet Underground came to be regarded as one of the most influential bands in the history of underground and alternative rock music. Reed's distinctive deadpan voice, poetic and transgressive lyrics, and experimental guitar playing were trademarks throughout his long career.

The Lou Reed - The Sire Years,Complete Albums Box is a specially priced ten-disc box set that includes the full collection of eight albums that Lou Reed recorded during his tenure with Sire Records. These albums span various periods of Reed’s career and showcase his distinctive musical style and lyrical prowess.

This box set provides a comprehensive journey through Lou Reed’s creative evolution, from his early solo work to his later experimental endeavors. It’s a must-have for fans and a testament to Reed’s enduring impact on rock music.

Let’s embark on a musical journey through a captivating ten-disc box set that encapsulates the artistic evolution of a legendary musician. Within this treasure trove, you’ll find a kaleidoscope of sounds, each album a chapter in the life of an enigmatic artist.

CD01 resonates with the raw energy of city streets, the pulse of New York captured in gritty lyrics and electric guitar riffs. It’s like stepping into a smoky dive bar where stories unfold.

CD02 a collaborative masterpiece with John Cale and pays homage to a visionary. Picture two old friends reminiscing about their mentor, Andy Warhol, over late-night coffee. Their voices intertwine, painting vivid memories.

CD03 delves into the human experience, loss, mortality, and the fragile threads that bind us. It’s a contemplative walk along the shoreline, waves whispering secrets.

CD04 invites you to a cozy fireside chat. Reed’s voice, warm and weathered, spins tales of love, longing, and twilight musings. The acoustic guitar strums like a faithful companion.

CD05 transports you to a dimly lit concert hall. The crowd hushes as Reed steps onstage. His gravelly voice weaves magic, turning familiar tunes into intimate confessions.

CD06 defies conventions. Synthesizers hum, beats pulse, and Reed experiments fearlessly. Imagine stardust settling on a laboratory floor, a cosmic collision of art and science.

CD07/08 is inspired by Edgar Allan Poe, is a moonlit seance. Reed channels the macabre, reciting dark poetry over haunting melodies. It’s a midnight train ride through haunted landscapes.

CD09/10 captures a live performance—the crowd’s energy palpable. Reed’s guitar wails, and the audience sways. It’s a celebration of imperfections, of being gloriously alive.

Immerse yourself in this box set. Listening back to Reed's Sire Years is a trip through Reed's later career, and his consistency as a recording artist makes for a remarkable aural expedition. Let the music be your compass, guiding you through Lou Reed’s labyrinthine soul. Each track whispers secrets, invites reflection, and leaves an indelible mark. (B)

  1. I don't thank you often enough, but for this, Yeah, thank you. I'm an old fart and have always sneered at Mr Reed. Its just in the last year or so I've learned how foolish I was. (same story with Prince)

    1. Hi Deadmandeadman,
I was 15 and was introduced to the Velvet underground and Lou Reed by my best friend's sister. At first I didn't get it, I was happy to keep playing Black Sabbath music. It was a while later as my musical horizons became broader that I started to enjoy his work. Then there was a lull before Lou Reed's New York album was released and I became a bigger fan. The Sire series is great and its how I remember him. This doesn't take away anything from his earlier works.
      Enjoy these.
      Cheers.

  2. I only listened to the Songs For Drella album for the first time a couple of months ago. I was so surprised at how good it was.... quirky, melodious with touch of humour. I'm looking forward to listening to the other albums - thanks again BB

  3. I'd like to say I discovered Lou in his Velvet Underground time, but I first heard Rock N Roll Animal and was blown away. Then, me, Mr. Studio albums, got VU Live double album and again couldn't believe it. I went back and got all the original albums I could find and yes, I even loved Metal Machine Music (one of my favorites actually) and only slowed down in the 90's. I just couldn't get into the albums as much anymore. I liked songs, but not complete albums somewhere after Red Joystick or Dirty blvd. But I saw him live numerous times, even then. Got to meet him (got drop in's) in the late 80's, early 90's. One of the few artists I was in awe of so much, I could hardly speak. Very intimidating, big dude. But actually nice. Had no time for BS. I will give these another listen. I'm sure I didn't give them the attention they probably deserve. One album that I treasure, btw, is an early VU album called VU 66 that has just two songs on it. Basically instrumental jams. Very good though. Look for it!
