VA - Folk Song America, A 20th Century Revival [1991] (4 x CDs)

“Folk Song America: A 20th Century Revival,” produced and released by the Smithsonian Collection Of Recordings in 1991, is not tied to any specific anniversary. However, it embodies the long-standing ambition of various local folk song societies to document the history of roots music in America. Over four decades later, we have a broader array of items to select from.

This 4 CD set successfully accomplishes two objectives. Firstly, it has spotlighted the origins of roots music, featuring early influences such as The Fisk Jubilee Singers, Buell Kazee, John Jacob Niles, Lead Belly, The Almanac Singers (including Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger), John and Alan Lomax, and others discovered in unique and intriguing ways. The set then transitions to post-World War II figures like Pete Seeger, The Weavers, The New Lost City Ramblers, and others. These influences were absorbed and expanded upon by the early 1960s folk revivalists, whose work constitutes the majority of the material here. Artists such as Peter Paul and Mary, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Tom Paxton, Dave Van Ronk, Jim Kweskin and the Jug Band, and many others reviewed in this space over the past few years, are given a new lease on life here as “the old fogies” who will inspire the next generation of folk revivalists. The series concludes with several post-folk revival tracks from artists like Taj Mahal, Sweet Honey in the Rock, and Magpie.

The second objective of the series is to serve as a catalyst for future interest in folk music. To support this goal, the Smithsonian, known for its premium historical music collections, provides an incredibly informative booklet by Norm Cohen. Even as someone who knows a lot about and lived through most of the 1960s folk revival. (B)
