VA - Studio 54 '5th Edition', The Biggest And Best Disco Collection Ever! [2006] (5 x CDs)

Studio 54 was the epicenter of '70s hedonism - a place that not only redefined the nightclub, but also came to symbolise an entire era. Its co-owners, Ian Schrager and Steve Rubell, two friends from Brooklyn, seemed to come out of nowhere to suddenly preside over a new kind of New York society. Now, 39 years after the velvet rope was first slung across the club's hallowed threshold, a feature documentary tells the real story behind the greatest club of all time.

The compilation “VA - Studio 54 ‘5th Edition’, The Biggest And Best Disco Collection Ever! [2006]” is a remarkable homage to the pulsating and transformative period of disco, with a special focus on the legendary Studio 54. Released in 2006, this collection embodies the quintessential music that characterized this vibrant era.

Situated in the bustling metropolis of New York City, Studio 54 was not merely a nightclub. It was a cultural revolution that amalgamated music, fashion, and celebrity in an unprecedented manner. During its heyday in the late 1970s, Studio 54 was the nerve center of the disco dance and music movement. The club was famed for its discerning and subjective admission policies, which were based on an individual’s style and appearance, fostering an ambiance of glamour and exclusivity.

The music that reverberated through the halls of Studio 54 was a vital element of its charm. The tracks in this box set mirror the diverse array of genres that resonated within the club, spanning electronic, hip hop, Latin, funk, and soul. This assortment of musical styles is a testament to the inclusive and exploratory ethos of the era.

The “VA - Studio 54 ‘5th Edition’” is more than a mere assortment of tracks. It is a sonic time machine that whisks listeners back to the core of the disco era. It encapsulates the dynamism, creativity, and exhilaration of a time when music was a binding force that drew people together on the dance floor. This compilation is a tribute to Studio 54, a venue that etched an indelible imprint on the music landscape and continues to shape pop culture. It is an essential acquisition for those yearning to experience the enchantment of the Studio 54 era anew. (B)

  2. Hi BB. First time I can leave a comment, don't ask why it didn't work before. Just as Dr Robert, Disco is not the type of music I usually like. But this collection is just amazing. And by the way, it's not only Disco, it's much better.

    1. Be careful of the knees, hedspace,
they are the most vulnerable part of the body when dancing to disco... but please don't avoid dancing to it.
      Cheers.

  5. BB You are one of the greats on the web! I can't begin to count the # of downloads I've gotten here! You helped me out recently with the Ben Liebrand collections. My personal opinion is that disco collections should contain only long versions. I fully understand that top 40 fans may not want to hear 7 minutes of drivel instead of the version they hear on the radio. That said, this is an interesting collection of songs, some which I would not call disco. What do you think BB?

    1. Hi kennynd.
Thank you for your kind words and for sharing your thoughts on disco collections. I agree that the beauty of music, especially genres like disco, often lies in the extended versions where the intricacies of the composition can be fully appreciated. However, I also understand that not everyone might enjoy longer versions, especially if they’re used to the radio edits.
As for the collection containing songs that you wouldn’t necessarily classify as disco, music is an ever-evolving art form. Genres often overlap and influence each other, leading to interesting and unexpected combinations. It’s possible that these songs, while not strictly disco, have elements that were influenced by or have influenced the genre. In the above text it states, "The tracks in this box set mirror the diverse array of genres that resonated within the club, spanning electronic, hip hop, Latin, funk, and soul."
In the end, what matters most is that the music resonates with you and brings you joy. After all, music is a universal language that speaks to our emotions and experiences.
      Cheers.
