ATLANTIC SAMPLER
VA - The Age Of Atlantic [1970]
The Age of Atlantic is one of those compilations that perfectly captures the spirit of early '70s rock. Released in 1970 by Atlantic Records, it was more than just a collection of songs, it was a gateway into the world of progressive and underground rock for a generation of listeners. At a time when albums were expensive, this sampler was a budget-friendly way for fans to discover new artists, and it introduced many to bands that would go on to define the era.
The lineup features a mix of established names and rising stars, blending hard rock, blues rock, and psychedelic influences into a cohesive listening experience. The inclusion of tracks from Led Zeppelin, Yes, Iron Butterfly, and Buffalo Springfield gives it serious credibility, while lesser-known acts add an element of discovery. The album’s gatefold sleeve, designed with a playful plasticine aesthetic, adds to its charm, making it a collector’s item as much as a musical experience. Beyond its historical significance, The Age of Atlantic remains a fascinating listen. It’s a snapshot of a time when rock was evolving, pushing boundaries, and finding new audiences. Whether you’re revisiting it for nostalgia or hearing it for the first time, it’s a reminder of how compilations like this helped shape musical tastes and introduce listeners to the legends of tomorrow. If you love classic rock, this is one compilation worth exploring. (B)

Not familiar with Dada or Cold Blood so should be interesting - also thanks for the last few posts which seemed to rapidly appear that I need to catch up on.
ReplyDeleteHi Dr Robert.
DeleteThat’s the fun of a sampler like The Age of Atlantic, it slips in a few lesser-known acts like Dada and Cold Blood alongside the giants, inviting that spirit of discovery. Hope they surprise you in a good way.
Cheers.
Lol I just bought this on vinyl!! :-) Thanks as always BB
ReplyDeleteHi caver.
DeleteThats great news.
There’s something deeply satisfying about holding a vinyl copy of The Age of Atlantic.
Cheers.
Thanks BB. I absolutely agree, the cheaper price of samplers led me to many new artists. Remember "Rock Machine Turns You On"!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, lemonflag
DeleteRock Machine Turns You On was a landmark moment, Columbia's way of saying “here’s a whole world of sound, go explore!” That sampler didn’t just turn listeners on to music, it sparked curiosity and shaped taste. It’s amazing how one affordable LP could open the door to artists like Leonard Cohen, Taj Mahal, Spirit, and so many others. If I haven't posted it yet I will in the near future.
Cheers.
BB, do you have the follow-up "The New Age Of Atlantic"?
ReplyDeleteI do indeed, Bud_e_luv_bomb.
DeleteThe New Age of Atlantic was released in 1972 and carried forward that spirit of affordable discovery with even more heavyweight acts. I thought I had this posted already, possibly I offered a link to a request. Anyhow, I will look at posting it in the not-too-distant future.
Cheers.
Here's an advance copy -

Your mention of CBS "The Rock Machine Turns you On" was a game changer, I bought it for next to nothing being a poor student and played it to death, introduced be to a whole new world, literally ! Two other Budget Samplers of the same vintage were the left field Transatlantic - "Now Listen Here !" and Liberty's - "Gutbucket" - God do I love those albums . Would love it if somebody could dig them up in their original form and repost them here as to my knowledge they have never been digitised in their original format. Brilliant mind blowin' stuff, thanks as always.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Rockolababy.
DeleteThat kind of passion is exactly what these samplers were all about, cracking open new worlds for curious minds with lean wallets. I have Rock Machine Turns You On. It was a revelation.
Gutbucket and Listen Here! A Transatlantic Sampler brought their own renegade charm.
I check my Archive and see what can be found.
Cheers.
