NUGGETS
VA - California Nuggets, Fuzz, Mod Rock, And R&B Unknowns Vol. 1 [2014]
Released in 2014 by Valley Grown Records, California Nuggets is a lovingly assembled unofficial CD compilation that dives deep into the San Joaquin Valley’s garage rock underbelly from 1960 to 1970. It’s a sonic scrapbook of fuzzed-out riffs, mod swagger, and R&B grit, all pulled from acetates, reels, and dusty 45s.
Iceman (Brymers) kick things off with a double dose of attitude, while Cantbury Fair’s “Acid” adds a splash of psychedelic weirdness. You get everything from loungey doo-wop to proto-punk stompers, with names like The Chocolate Tunnel, The Buddhas, and Sedate Sunshine Colony painting a picture of a scene that was wild, weird, and wonderfully unpolished.
What makes this compilation special isn’t just the music, it’s the care. Mastered from fragile originals and paired with a 24-page booklet, it’s a tribute to forgotten bands who played with heart, even if history forgot their names.
This is gold dust: a regional echo of the acid folk ethos, full of raw emotion and outsider charm. (B)
Thanks, Ziggy, for this one. (Thank Ziggy)
