VA - Hi Times, The Hi Records R&B Years [1995] (3 x CD's)

 HI TIMES

VA - Hi Times, The Hi Records R&B Years [1995] (3 x CDs)

Hi Times: Hi Records R&B Years is a superb three-disc box set covering all of the label's greatest hits, plus a number of forgotten gems. Al Green understandably dominates the set, since he not only was Hi's biggest artist, but he also defined the label's sound with producer Willie Mitchell. As a result, the music on these three discs can sound a little similar at times, but the songwriting and performances from the likes of Green, Ann Peebles, and Joe Clay is first-rate, making Hi Times a necessary addition to any serious soul collection. (AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine)

Hi Records, was a label with personality, thanks in large part to its strongman, Willie Mitchell. Generally pictured as the rambunctious little brother of Stax, Hi actually dates back to 1957, but its heyday coincided with label golden-boy Al Green's commercial flowering in the '70s. Hi Times opens with a 1959 track from old Elvis sideman Bill Black and ends with a 1977 recording from Green's The Belle Album, which pretty much signaled the end of his (or anyone else's) top-dog-of-soul reign. In between, there's a neat sampling of Memphis sounds highlighted by the '70s classics of Ann Peebles, Syl Johnson, O.V. Wright, and Otis Clay. (Amazon)

This is a fantastic compilation album of equally fantastic songs and artists! Hi Records is often overlooked for their contributions to soul, and specifically the Memphis sound, but this is a must for anyone who truly loves American R&B music.

VA - Storm In The Garage [2003] (3 x CD's)

GARAGE ROCK

VA - Storm in the Garage [2003] (3 x CD's)

The "Storm in the Garage" box set is by Italian reissue label Akarma and give us the garage rock box set to salivate over. Any garage rock buff should be excited about this collection, though if you've been buying compilations like Garage Punk Unknowns or Psychedelic Unknowns, you may already have a lot of these bands, but there are a few unreleased and rare tracks to whet your curiosity like the unreleased track by The Damnation of Adam Blessing or the pounding cover of Arthur Lee and Love's 7 and 7 Is by The Soulbenders. An Italian import does seem like a strange way to pick up rare and obscure 1960's garage rock out of the USA, but it is nice having all of this great stuff in one place, plus their are picture sleeves of the single artwork when available and information on each band which seems to have been culled from the Borderline Books' Fuzz Acid & Flowers a great place to read about these bands. A definitive 60s garage collector must-have. (Amazon)

Although stated as US Sixties Garage At Its Best, but please note that this compilation also features a number of Canadian bands.

VA - Across the Great Divide, Getting It Together In The Country 1968-74 [2019] (3 x CD's)

FOLK ROCK

VA - Across the Great Divide, Getting It Together In The Country 1968-74 [2019] (3 x CD's)

At the height of psychedelia and the worldwide Summer of Love, Traffic retreated from the bright lights of the city and the music industry hurly-burly to get their act together in the wilds of rural Berkshire - where, away from the outside world, they worked on an organic fusion of jazz, folk, pop and R&B elements that would herald a game-changing new maturity in British rock. Over the next twelve months or so, Traffic's symbiosis of bucolic living and naturalistic music would be mirrored by events of the other side of the Atlantic: The Band's rootsy country/soul/R&B stew, The Byrds' move into country-rock and Crosby Stills & Nash's intricate harmonies and acoustic-led instrumentation would all strike a chord with British rock bands and the burgeoning hippie scene in general. Across The Great Divide: Getting It Together In The Country is the first compilation to shine a light on this curiously neglected stitch in the constantly-evolving British rock tapestry of the late Sixties/early Seventies. Joining huge names like Rod Stewart, Traffic and Fairport Convention are cult underground acts, mainstream Sixties pop groups updating their sound, a post-Dylan wave of back-to-the-land singer/songwriters and a clutch of righteously obscure rural rockers whose music failed to find an outlet at the time. Over four hours of music housed in a clamshell box containing a 44-page booklet, Across The Great Divide assiduously charts the fascinating period when a posse of British musicians bravely attempted to build Cripple Creek in perfidious Albion's green and pleasant land before shrugging their shoulders and moving on to either glam-rock, hard rock or the movement's logical successor, the spit-and-sawdust pub rock circuit. (Amazon)

It's an impressively deep and diverse track list, and anyone looking to explore this brief time when artists were casting off the shackles and trappings of the pop charts while looking to make music with minimal fuss will surely find planety of old favorites and new artists to check out. That's the best kind of archival set, and Across the Great Divide works both as a history lesson and a good listen. Great collection. Some old favourites and other more obscure fare.

Matt Monro - The Singer's Singer [2001] (4 x CD's)

MATT MONRO

Matt Monro - The Singer's Singer [2001] (4 x CD's)

Matt Monro (born Terence Edward Parsons, 1 December 1930 – 7 February 1985) was an English singer who became one of the most popular entertainers on the international music scene during the 1950's and 1970's. Known as The Man with the Golden Voice, he filled cabarets, nightclubs, music halls, and stadiums across the world in his 30-year career. All Music has described Monro as "one of the most underrated pop vocalists of the '60s", who "possessed the easiest, most perfect baritone in the business". His recordings include the UK Top 10 hits: "Portrait of My Love", "My Kind of Girl", "Softly As I Leave You", "Walk Away" and "Yesterday". He also recorded several film themes such as "From Russia with Love" for the James Bond film of the same name, "Born Free" for the film of the same name and "On Days Like These" for The Italian Job. (Wikipedia)

Back in the great musical sixties there were many singers with wonderful voices, but a Matt Monto's commanding voice stood out above the rest and whenever a song came over the airwaves, it was clear Matt Monro possessed one of the greatest singing voices ever...stunning "The Singer's Singer" Box Set is a must have for anyone who enjoys the finest the world of music has to offer, assembled brilliantly with love by daughter Michele Monro, engrossing essay plus tributes by notables such as Sinatra make for a moving & fascinating read, music lavishly contained in all four discs is simply sublime, making one fall in love all over again with that warm lush voice that is as good as great singing gets. In addition of all the wonderful hits, songs like "If I Never Sing Another Song" or "The Long And Winding Road" show a remarkable artist who could make any song a memorable & magical listening experience! Bravo Matt Monro and RIP. (Amazon)

Had Matt Monro been American his name would have been up there with Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin and the rest. He was popular in America, in fact several of the recordings in this collection were made there. Reportedly, Frank Sinatra claimed Matt Monro to be one of his favourite singers. Praise indeed.

VA - Ears of Stone: 1960's Folk, Country & Pop from Nashville Indies [2010]

ULTRA RARE GEMS FROM THE VAULTS

VA - Ears of Stone: 1960's Folk, Country & Pop from Nashville Indies [2010]

A peculiar package in more ways than one, Ears of Stone has 20 Nashville-issued tracks from the 1960's that cover such a wide range as to be nearly unclassifiable. At least the strange "Ears of Stone" title was chosen for a reason, as it's the name of one of the songs here (by the Network). Not much else about this compilation can be explained away as easily, since the liner notes, unbelievably, actually belong to an entirely different compilation on the T-Bird label, Early Country and Western from Bullet Records Nashville, which consists of country music from the late 40's and early '50's. It's hard to believe this got past quality control, especially as the illustrations in the notes actually feature some of the '60s artist's and singles on the Ears of Stone compilation, but there you have it. At least it can be inferred from those illustrations that the CD contains tracks from obscure Nashville independent labels, particularly Spar and Bullet, whose releases have been spotlighted on numerous other compilations on the T-Bird label. Not one of the artists on Ears of Stone has any degree of fame, even among collectors, and without inclusion of the proper liner notes, it's hard to even cite anything specific about their origins.

Yet for all the strikes this has against it even before you've played the disc, it's a more worthwhile and listenable anthology than you might expect, even if its appeal is limited to diehards. There's pretty fair country-pop from Bobby & Bergen, and decent, rustic, under-produced folk-rock from Him & Her, whose "Too Much Too Soon" sounds like a garage Sonny & Cher. Also in an undernourished, yet charming, mid-'60s folk-rock vein, is the Mad Tea Party's "Keep It in Your Mind," which brings to mind a poppier Beau Brummels. The Seventh Plane's "Time to Realize" is engaging, tentative sunshine pop; the Network's "Ears of Stone" seems like it could have been done by the same group, with its pleasing male-female vocal harmonies, but it takes a more psychedelic tack, with enchanting bittersweet melodies buttressed by a subdued fuzz guitar. Christopher Jordan comes off like a rawer, more folk-rock inclined Neil Diamond on his self-penned "When It's Over"; the mysterious Tres (a trio, natch) offer confident, stripped-down country-rock. Several covers of pop/rock and country hits don't in any way challenge or redefine the familiar versions, but the Now Generation's cover of the Byrds/Turtles' "You Showed Me" is nonetheless entertaining, if in a soundalike sort of way. Truth be told, almost all of these tracks sound like underfunded demos, yet that's part of their charm and appeal. Lacking the budget and time to come up with something slicker, the artists do the best with what they've got and create some good, unaffected music unbeholden to a set formula, reflecting a modestly creative underbelly of the Nashville scene that's escaped the history books. Now if only this could be redone with the real liner notes.  (AllMusic Review by Richie Unterberger)

Tom Waits - Asylum Years + Beautiful Maladies, The Island Years + The Early Years Vol. 01 & 02 +Used Songs 1973-1980 + Under the Covers (The Songs He Didn't Write)

Thomas Alan Waits (born December 7, 1949) is an American singer, songwriter, musician, composer, and actor. His lyrics often focus on the underbelly of society and are delivered in his trademark deep, gravelly voice. He worked primarily in jazz during the 1970's, but his music since the 1980's has reflected greater influence from blues, rock, vaudeville, and experimental genres.

Despite a lack of mainstream commercial success, Waits has influenced many musicians and gained an international cult following, and several biographies have been written about him. In 2015, he was ranked at No. 55 on Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time". He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011. (Wikipedia)

Here is a set of compilations that highlight the majesty of Tom Waits artistry.

MUSIC MOVIE DOCUMENTARY #08 Tom Waits - Tales From A Cracked Jukebox [2017]

TOM WAITS

MUSIC MOVIE DOCUMENTARY #08   Tom Waits - Tales From A Cracked Jukebox [2017]

Tom Waits is one of the most original musicians of the last five decades. Renowned for his gravelly voice and dazzling mix of musical styles, he’s also one of modern music’s most enigmatic and influential artists.  His songs have been covered by Bruce Springsteen, Rod Stewart and Norah Jones, among many others. But Waits has always pursued his own creative vision, with little concern for musical fashion.  In a long career of restless reinvention, from the barfly poet of his early albums to the junkyard ringmaster of Swordfishtrombones, his songs chronicle lives from the margins of American society – drifters, dreamers, hobos and hoodlums – and his music draws on a rich mix of influences, including the blues, jazz, Weimar cabaret and film noir.  Using rare archive, audio recordings and interviews, this film is a bewitching after-hours trip through the surreal, moonlit world of Waits’ music – a portrait of a pioneering musician and his unique, alternative American songbook. LOST 60's

VA - Forgotten & Lost Tracks of The 60's (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3

The sixties was a historic era for music that gave some magnificent and varied music, often experiment in nature and full of life.

Presented here is a world somewhere between "lost" and "hits." of the sixties. Tracks that you simply don't hear too often, in some cases totally forgotten by the majority of people. This compilation features many major stars of the era, however, more notable are the one-hit wonders whose names may be recalled (and then probably only vaguely) by some listeners.  For the most part this is a collection of pop recordings, originally released on 45 RPM singles between 1960 and 1969, which resulted in music being quickly taken off of the radio or never broadcasted at all. With the abundance of music artists coming into the music industry and new record releases, the rich music of the 60’s has often gotten lost or forgotten.  The bulk of these selections, then, were minor hits that will be remembered by people who were listening to AM radio during the second half of the 1960's.

As usual there at tracks that you will know and some you may not. All in all an unusual compilation including a few rarities. This is volume 1 of this series. Enjoy!

VA - Cafe Exil (New Adventures In European Music 1972-1980) (2x LP's)

CAFE EXIL

VA - Cafe Exil (New Adventures In European Music 1972-1980) (2x LP's)

A double vinyl LP pressing,  from Ace containing 16 tracks of Electronic, Jazz, Rock, Pop tunes. When David Bowie and Iggy Pop relocated from LA to continental Europe, taking trains to Berlin, Paris and Warsaw, they would have come across new music that was very different to the burgeoning disco scene they left behind. Cafe Exil - named after one of Bowie's favourite Berlin haunts - imagines the soundtrack that would have informed Low, Heroes and Lodger. It's an awesome mix of electronica, Krautrock and experimental treats. There are key tracks from members of Can and Tangerine Dream, fascinating obscurities by German act Streetmark and Italian library maestro Piero Umiliani, the Herzog-soundtracking Popul Vuh, and highly collectible avant-strangeness by Annette Peacock. Czech-born Jan Hammer's beautiful, light, atmospheric groove is among myriad surprises. "Cafe Exil" has been put together by Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley and Jason Wood, author of multiple books on cinema and programmer at Home in Manchester. It fits in with other recent Ace compilations such as "English Weather" and "76 In The Shade" - it creates a mood, a time and a place. You're right there, sat next to Bowie, drinking his Pernod and black, in a darkly lit Berlin bar. (Amazon)
