CAFE EXIL

VA - Cafe Exil (New Adventures In European Music 1972-1980) (2x LP's)

A double vinyl LP pressing,  from Ace containing 16 tracks of Electronic, Jazz, Rock, Pop tunes. When David Bowie and Iggy Pop relocated from LA to continental Europe, taking trains to Berlin, Paris and Warsaw, they would have come across new music that was very different to the burgeoning disco scene they left behind. Cafe Exil - named after one of Bowie's favourite Berlin haunts - imagines the soundtrack that would have informed Low, Heroes and Lodger. It's an awesome mix of electronica, Krautrock and experimental treats. There are key tracks from members of Can and Tangerine Dream, fascinating obscurities by German act Streetmark and Italian library maestro Piero Umiliani, the Herzog-soundtracking Popul Vuh, and highly collectible avant-strangeness by Annette Peacock. Czech-born Jan Hammer's beautiful, light, atmospheric groove is among myriad surprises. "Cafe Exil" has been put together by Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley and Jason Wood, author of multiple books on cinema and programmer at Home in Manchester. It fits in with other recent Ace compilations such as "English Weather" and "76 In The Shade" - it creates a mood, a time and a place. You're right there, sat next to Bowie, drinking his Pernod and black, in a darkly lit Berlin bar. (Amazon)

  2. I spent this time in Hamburg, and at that time the term "Hamburg scene" was coined here as a term coined by journalists for the jazz and fun music clique that had combined Dixieland jazz with elements of rock and pop music.
I was less involved in it at the time, so I get an exciting look back at a time that changed my musical outlook considerably, thank you very much!

    1. Hi WOODY,
It always amazes me how we rejected music at some stage only to find its beauty at a later time in life.

      Cheers.

  3. Hi!

Thanx for this one. An "unknown" area in music here (growing up across the Pond at this time) so most should be "new" artists here = "new" hears here.

    Cheers!
    Ciao! For now.

  4. I lived and studied in Berlin(West) from 1972 to 1980. Once during the mid-70s I caught a glimpse of a small, very skinny person with a thin moustache: in the foyer of "Quartier Latin", a live rock music club in Tiergarten, Potsdamer Str. 96, when this person, of course David Bowie, being in the company of two bodyguards, rushed past me to meet Kevin Ayers who had just given a full concert there. The place was neither Exil nor Dschungel, not at all “close to the Wall”, there was no Pernod, just plain Schultheiss in short bulbous beer bottles. But, no matter, it was my five seconds in the glory of decadent 70’s Berlin fame (or is it just transfiguring memories?) …

Thanks a lot, Butterboy, for this very unique looking (and I guess, also sounding) compilation! Best, TC
