VA - World Psychedelic Classics 3, Love's a Real Thing, The Funky Fuzzy Sounds of West Africa [2004]

Love's a Real Thing is an excellent introduction into the wild sound world of West Africa in the '70s. As Ronnie Graham points out in his superb liner notes, the '60s were a time of assimilation for much of the popular music of Africa. Many bands were playing a hybrid of Latin and African music typified by the Congolese rhumba of Franco & OK Jazz. The '70s were a different bag, though, with the heavy electric sounds of Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Cream, and others seeping into the consciousness of a new generation of Africans who were also contending with their own emerging sense of identity. The results are raucous, exuberant melting pots of funky soul, psychedelic rock, and honey-sweet Latin horns mixed through the sensibilities of extremely talented African bands on the cusp of developing styles like soukous, mbalax, and Afro-beat. Senegal's Star Band Number One (aka Etoile de Dakar and confusingly billed here as No. 1 de No. 1), were already seasoned veterans by the dawn of the 1970s, and the sound of their "Guajira Van" with its sinewy fuzz guitar solo and talking drum stabs is glorious proto-mbalax. Elsewhere, there are songs more directly inspired by rock and soul. "Allah Wakbarr" by Ofo & the Black Company has a heavy acid rock guitar lead competing with a conga drum for the top of the mix. The title cut, "Love's a Real Thing" by Gambia's Super Eagles, is a gritty organ and electric guitar-driven soul number that could have come out of Memphis' Stax Records. One of the later period numbers, William Onyeabor's "Better Change Your Mind" from 1978, is sophisticated Afro-soul riding on an alien keyboard line. "Keleya" from Mali's Moussa Doumbia is the funkiest of the Afro-beat songs on Love's a Real Thing; its chunky organ solo and James Brown grunts beat out the more laid-back "Ifa" from Tunji Oyelana & the Blenders and "Awon-Ojise-Oluwa" from Nigerian studio veteran Gasper Lawal. There have been other series that have explored Africa in this vibrant and historic period -- the fantastic Ethiopiques, Dakar Sound, and Discotheque discs document Ethiopia, Senegal, and Guinea, respectively -- but what Love's a Real Thing lacks in depth it makes up for in breadth, and the fact that it surveys the whole region rather than a single area makes it a great entry point for them all. The Complete Blue Note Sixties Sessions is an attractive six-disc box set featuring all of Dexter Gordon's '60s recordings for the label in chronological order. Such classic albums as Dexter Calling and Go! were recorded during these years, and they are presented in their entirety, as are two complete sessions that have been previously unavailable on CD and several unreleased alternate takes. This is a beautifully packaged and comprehensive 6 x CD set of Dexter Gordon's 60's sessions at Blue Note. This collects the towering tenor saxophonist's Blue Note recordings from 1961 to 1965, a period of high creativity in a long and diverse career that had begun in the bop revolution of the '40s. Dexter did these sessions after being released from prison. He played these sessions with exquisite technique with musicians that were for the most part at the top of their game. Throughout he is heard in the quartets and quintets that he preferred, playing with unique authority and sustained invention. The support is consistently strong and sometimes brilliant, including contributions from pianist Sonny Clark and drummer Philly Joe Jones. A Paris session with fellow bop pioneers Bud Powell and Kenny Clarke is a highlight. Gordon's music had continued to grow and develop into the '60s, and it's possible to hear touches of Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane in his playing here, Gordon taking notes from musicians who had learned from him years before. The set includes alternate takes and recordings of Gordon's fascinating reminiscences include interviews where he discusses influences. Gordon's career spanned five decades, but this period with blue note stands out as one of be. (Amazon)

Dexter Gordon always had the quality of seeming to be speaking with you through the horn. In many ways, his sound and style are more the epitome of jazz than any one other musician. In and out of the scene because of an intermittent problem with heroin, the sixties were his most exciting period. If you've heard Dexter before, then you know what this is like and can't do better than this set.

Compiled here are 25 of Shiptown’s most compelling sides recorded between 1965-1977

For a brief moment in the mid-20th century, Norfolk, Virginia was the center of a musical universe led by Noah Biggs. The freewheeling wanderer originally came to the city at the height of the Great Depression in search of a job in the shipping industry, and eventually found work as a longshoreman with one of the area’s thriving shipyards. With a passion for gambling that fueled his interest in entrepreneurship, Biggs placed his bets on the record industry, incidentally, starting one of the few great labels to ever emerge from the area. Shiptown Records was Norfolk’s answer to Motown, a commercial outlet for the loose network of soul and R&B musicians who made a living performing in the area’s nightclubs. A new compilation from the Numero Group, Eccentric Soul: The Shiptown Label, offers a window into the imprint and into the era’s strange and exciting landscape, showcasing its importance without over speaking on the music’s behalf.

Shiptown established an image and brand identity for the “Norfolk Sound,” a regional style of soul music that supposedly inspired the Beatles and found new life as part of England’s “Northern Soul” movement. The label also benefited from the steady influx of people (and capital) moving through the city during the 1950s and 1960s, thanks to its booming shipyards and navy base. Frank Guida, a local record executive who owned the shop and studio where much of the “Norfolk Sound” was first recorded, helped build out the infrastructure of the scene through a successful suite of labels and artists, like vocalist Gary “U.S.” Bonds, who released a handful of singles that spent multiple weeks on the Billboard charts. There was also a certain continuity between the sounds of coastal Virginia and other Black diasporas abroad, as acts like Jimmy Soul borrowed ideas from the calypso records coming to Norfolk from the Caribbean. Meanwhile, the saxophonist Gene Barge’s style seemed to channel the influence of the big band ensembles present throughout his time in the U.S. military, providing backing instrumentation for an entire roster of musicians beyond Shiptown, on labels including Chess and Stax Records. Eccentric Soul: The Shiptown Label brings these influences together, connecting the spirit of the region with the broader sounds of the 1960s.

Ida Sands, a vocalist and member of the Soul Duo and the Idets, became one of Shiptown’s biggest stars. Her solo track “Start All Over Again” appears around halfway through this compilation, reverberating like a triumphant firecracker explosion from the golden age of Phil Spector’s wall of sound. With brash horns, thick guitars, and a fuzzy, lo-fi warmth, the 1969 single feels like a clear standout, the kind of perfect pop single that crate-diggers spend their entire lives looking for—even as it’s conspicuously buried by the album’s sequencing. Sands eventually married founder Noah Biggs, pushing her group the Idets closer to the label. Her bandmate Barbara Stant would become another breakout star for Shiptown, as well as its most prolific recording artist. With their support, Stant released a variety of singles, including “Baby I Love You/I'm Going to Outfit You Baby,” “My Mind Holds onto Yesterday,” and “Unsatisfied Woman,” all of which appear on this compilation. The latter is a sparse, downtempo standout with all of the pain and heartbreak of an Etta James song. Over soft guitar tones, Wurlitzer chords, and steady drums, Stant sings about the humiliation and debasement of investing time and energy in a relationship that’s fated to fall apart. It’s an agonizing entry into a catalog of inarguably sublime breakup songs, one that transcends regional and temporal boundaries to tap into something timeless.

The entire album is filled with similar moments of transcendence, where passion, grief, and joy become more than the sum of their circumstances. With its warm, slightly detuned horns, Wilson Williams’ “I Got a Lot to be Thankful For” is glorious and sure to be sampled by rappers for years to come. For all the incredible blogs, websites, documentaries, and local archives dedicated to preserving the depth of this historical period, nothing compares to musical moments like these.

To listen to the compilation is to bear witness to just how circumstantial the canonical histories of Motown, Stax, Chess, and other mid-century soul labels really are, despite the obvious quality of their catalogs. Shiptown will never be Motown, but it feels equally representative of that particular time and environment in pop music and Virginia, in part because it echoes Motown’s orientation to the political and economic climate of the 1960s. By welcoming listeners into the formation of a minor history—with all of its theaters, streets, neighborhoods, and diasporic influence—Numero gives us something more than the immediate satisfaction of even the best recorded music. Something for these long hot summer days...

Dream pop is a subgenre of alternative rock and neo-psychedelia that emphasizes atmosphere and sonic texture as much as pop melody. Common characteristics include breathy vocals, dense productions, and effects such as reverb, echo, tremolo, and chorus. It often overlaps with the related genre of shoegaze, and the two genre terms have at times been used interchangeably.

The genre came into prominence in the 1980s through the work of groups such as Cocteau Twins and A.R. Kane. Acts such as My Bloody Valentine, Galaxie 500, Julee Cruise, Lush, and Mazzy Star released significant albums in the style. It saw renewed popularity among millennial listeners following the late-'00s success of Beach House.

The term "dreampop" was coined in the late 1980s by Alex Ayuli of A.R. Kane to describe his band's eclectic sound, which blended ethereal dub production, distorted guitar, and drum machine, among other influences. In the 1990s, "dream pop" and "shoegazing" were interchangeable and regionally dependent terms, with "dream pop" being the name by which "shoegazing" was typically known in America. AllMusic describes the dream pop label as covering both the "loud, shimmering feedback" of My Bloody Valentine and the "post-Velvet Underground guitar rock" of Galaxie 500.

The 1990 Cocteau Twins album Heaven or Las Vegas proved an iconic release in the genre. The UK band Lush became an influential act in the genre during the 1990s, with Robin Guthrie producing their 1992 debut album Spooky. The 1993 album So Tonight That I Might See by American band Mazzy Star reflected a dream pop sound specific to "the glitzy decay that is L.A.", according to Pitchfork; that publication called the album a "dream pop classic". The 2010 album Teen Dream by Baltimore duo Beach House established the group as purveyors of modern dream pop that drew on the "languid reveries" of Cocteau Twins, Mazzy Star and Galaxie 500. The group's success in the late 2000s solidified the popularity of dream pop with millennial listeners.

There has never been an officially released compilation and thorough overview of dream pop. Compiled as always using the very latest and highest quality digital remasters for superior sound quality and enjoyment.

I was reading an Article from Vintage Rock Magazine presented as a 3 part special where they identified a list of 60 Essential Songs that reflected The Rock'n'Roll Years between 1950 - 1964. It's a really good list.

Rock’n’roll may not have been fully formed quite yet, but throughout the first half of the decade pioneering records emerged that helped forge the sound of its second half… In the 1956 film proclaimed: “Rock and roll is a river of music that has absorbed many streams: rhythm and blues, jazz, ragtime, Rock, Rock, Rock cowboy songs, country songs, folk songs… All have contributed to the big beat.”

The first half of the decade sprung into life thanks to the sizzling rhythm and blues that leapt from the juke joints to blow up the airwaves, alongside a handful of prototype rockers waxed by artists toying with a new sound. The second half was to elicit a revolution: a sea change in mainstream culture spearheaded by those fresh-faced upstarts who’d been tuning in and making plans to recast the magic as something entirely their own.

Rock’n’roll’s final stand, the rise of the teen superstar, glorious girl-groups, doo-wop delights and plenty more besides – the new decade brought starry-eyed thrills aplenty.

As the 60's began, the renegade spirit of the previous decade was rapidly changing form. era embodied in the swinging hips of Memphis’ That revolutionary megastar, fi red up via the stinging guitar licks of Cliff Gallup and pounded out by the likes of Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis, was on its way out, soon to make way for a raft of new sounds. Several major events played their part. First, the shrieking soul of rock’n’roll clammed up as Little Richard denounced the big beat and turned to God and gospel, Jerry Lee’s career was capsized by his marriage scandal, and Elvis shipped off to the army. Then, of course, in 1959, news of the ill-fated flight that took the lives of Richie Valens, Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper cut deep. By the year’s end Chuck Berry was looking at two years behind bars, while rock’n’roll’s once-irrepressible mouthpiece, DJ Alan Freed, felt the brunt of payola. And then, yet more tragedy hit as 1960 got underway and one of rock’s fi nest Foot soldiers, Eddie Cochran, was also struck down. Meanwhile, back from the army, Elvis commenced a Hollywood career that would replace the wild up curled lip for the saccharine smile of an all-American boy.

The record execs, on the other hand, had landed with their bums in the butter, capitalising on the rise of the teenager. What was once a hard-won rebellion was gently being ruddered towards a cleaner cut vision of tomorrow. The pure rockabilly hump that had defined the previous years was muted, with many of the original rockers either fading quietly into the background or adapting to survive with a mainstream palette of doo-wop, pop, country and R&B. Add a new breed that mixed up a fresh folk formula with an eye on social change and the climate had soon changed irreversibly. But all was not lost. The age of the teen heartthrob was ushered in, all East Coast doo-wop and dreamy girl-group harmonies, while surf music rode over from the shores of California, and the wonders of Motown fi red up. Up in the north of England, picking up the mantle left them by their rocking heroes, Liverpool’s mighty foursome began a rapid ascent – from Love Me Do to full-blown Beatlemania by 1964. And far from casting a shadow over the charts, it all amounted to some of the fi nest pop music ever made. What follows is just a snapshot of the sounds that soundtracked that first fascinating run – yet another glorious time to be alive! (Vintage Magazine)

I've decided to take a break from the K-tells series for a while, mainly because I've run out of compilations compiled to date.

With today’s post it will mark 90 albums posted over the past 30 weeks. A great number of these albums have never appeared on the internet before, so true exclusives to this blog. I need another year or so to compile the next batch that will hopefully run for about the same amount of time. I hope you have all enjoyed the selections posted so far, particularly in such high quality, and a HUGE thank you to BB for accepting my contributions and for all his time and effort in helping to make these available.

VA - 40 Number 1 Hits - 40 Great Hits by the Original Artists (K-tel NE 1008 UK) (2021 Expanded Edition) (2CD) (1977) 40 Number 1 Hits - 40 Great Hits by the Original Artists was released by K-tel in the UK in 1977. Advertised as '40 Number 1 Hits', I've always found it strange that Stephanie de Sykes' "Born with a Smile on My Face" never actually made it to #1 in the UK or any other country in the world. She had her first hit in 1974 with the Roger Holman penned "Born with a Smile on My Face" which reached Number 2 in the UK Singles Chart. It also reached number 19 in Australia. This 2021 remastered expanded edition now includes an additional 5 bonus tracks all reaching #1 in the UK before the original album release date of 1977.
