BLUE EYED SOUL
VA - Best Blue Eyed Soul (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2
Blue-eyed soul (also known as white soul) is a term used to describe R'nB or soul music performed by white artists. The term doesn't refer to a distinct style of music, and the meaning of "blue-eyed soul" has evolved over decades. Originally, the term was associated with mid-1960s white artists who performed soul and rhythm and blues music that was similar to the raw, expressive music of Motown. Many blue-eyed soul singers have been described as "sounding black", because they had a full voice with a throaty, resonant timbre. To a lesser extent, the term has been applied to singers in other music genres that are influenced by soul music. (Wikipedia)
I really don’t like the term "Blue Eyed Soul". There should be no Black Soul, White Soul or Blue Eyed Soul. It's just SOUL music to me. But that is what the marketing gurus have named it. It has a distinct feeling of its own and does not really sound like the Soul music I am used to. However, I do like the sounds that these listed artists have created. Here are my favourite songs in this Genre/Style (?) Enjoy!

Thanks for popping in, Bill. Appreciated.
DeleteThese tunes can be very relaxing also.
Cheers
Where's Rod Stewart?
ReplyDeleteAgree but please do not be disappointed...
DeleteMy miss. Will reevaluate Rod Stewart's cataloge later on.
Cheers
Thanks for posting these, Butter. Growing up with ear to transistor radio and console stereo (mid-1960s-70s), a lot of what I heard and enjoyed was soul out of Philadelphia and Chicago, and beyond: MFSB, Temptations, Spinners, Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose, Four Tops, Fifth Dimension, O'Jays, Stylistics, and many more. I miss the youthful innocence of having ears utterly deaf to the artists' pigmentation... something that's utterly insignificant about anyone.
ReplyDeleteAnd so I agree with you, in objecting to categorizing sweet soul by how much melanin the singer has. And I like and am intrigued by your track selection here, and am startled to see nothing by Captain and Tennille... maybe add them to Volume 3? (I remember my shock at discovering Toni Tennille is Caucasian - again, not that it matters.) Taylor Dayne would merit a track or two in that next volume, maybe even Natalie Merchant, and - thanks, LemonFlag! - Rod Stewart... and more yet.
Thanks for everything, and a big thank-you goes to all from-the-soul singers, regardless of tint!
Right On! Aging Child
DeleteAlways good to see you here.

ReplyDeleteI am never disappointed by your collections. I think what you put together is amazing. It takes a lot of effort and thinking to create the many different themes you have given us.
The thing I like about Rod Stewart is he sings like Sam Cooke and he wrote most of his songs. So a set by him would be interesting. (I bought my wife the LP Every Picture on our wedding day 48 years ago).
Thanks Lemonflag.
DeleteI think Rod Stewart is a special artist. He certainly has a unique soul voice in the vein of Sam Cook, a distinctive raspy singing voice. Whilst he had many hits he also has many underrated songs and performance. His version of Handbags & Gladrags gives me goosebumps. He is a great interpretative singer also. I have pretty much all of Rod Stewart's output. You have inspired me to do an Underrated Rod compilation . Keep your eyes out.... Coming Soon!
Cheers
Always good to be here, my friend. Not only do you have a vast array of sweet sounds, and a keen and generous familiarity with it all... you also host a fine listening room, with space for a lot of interested (and grateful) folks. Thank you for all that, and the wide-open doors, and encouragement to come in and discover and learn. Cheers, sir!
ReplyDeleteAnd how about Eddie Hinton for a Volume 3? In my book the greatest blue-eyed soul man of them all.
ReplyDeleteHi Janne.
DeleteI agree wholeheartedly, will include Eddie Hilton in Volume 3.
Cheers
