THE CHURCH
Church - Church Songs, Psychedelic Masterpieces (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3
The Church, an Australian psychedelic rock band, formed in Sydney in 1980. Initially associated with new wave, neo-psychedelia and indie rock, their music later came to feature slower tempos and surreal soundscapes reminiscent of dream pop and post-rock. Glenn A. Baker has written that "From the release of the 'She Never Said' single in November 1980, this unique Sydney-originated entity has purveyed a distinctive, ethereal, psychedelic-tinged sound which has alternatively found favour and disfavor in Australia." The Los Angeles Times has described the band's music as "dense, shimmering, exquisite guitar pop".
The founding members were Steve Kilbey on lead vocals and bass guitar, Peter Koppes and Marty Willson-Piper on guitars and Nick Ward on drums. Ward played only on their debut album, and the band's drummer for the rest of the 1980s was Richard Ploog. Jay Dee Daugherty (ex-Patti Smith Group) played drums from 1990 to 1993, followed by "timEbandit" Tim Powles (ex-The Venetians), who remains with them to the present day. Koppes left the band from 1992 to 1997, and Willson-Piper left in 2013. Ian Haug, formerly of Powderfinger, replaced him. Kilbey, Koppes and Powles also recorded together as The Refo:mation in 1997. The Church's debut album, Of Skins and Heart (1981), delivered their first radio hit, "The Unguarded Moment", and they were signed to major labels in Australia, Europe and the United States. However, the US label, dissatisfied with their second album, dropped the band without releasing it. This put a dent in their international success, but they returned to the charts in 1988 with the album Starfish and the US Top 40 hit "Under the Milky Way". Subsequent mainstream success has proved elusive, but the band retains a large international cult following and were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in Sydney in 2010. The Church continue to tour and record, releasing their 25th studio album, Man Woman Life Death Infinity, in October 2017. (Wikipedia)
"I'm often astounded that The Church didn't a) Become a massive sensation after Priest = Aura b) Overdose and perish, or c) Fade into oblivion like so many of their peers. How many other acts can still release fresh, invigorating, and actually relevant music after 30 years? The gentle progression they took from their early jangle to their current psychedelic era is scattered with so many songs that SHOULD have been hits that it's difficult to fathom. Messers Kilbey, Wilson-Piper and Koppes started this wonderful band in Australia in their youth, all those many years ago, and while most fans prefer their early days with Richard Ploog on the skins, I've grown to admire the dynamic changes Tim Powell has brought over the last dozen or so years, and the stability he's given to the band. Step into The Church, close your eyes, and let Kilbey's poetic imagery and bass wash over you. Let the interplay between MW-P and Peter Koppes' guitars dazzle you. Let the rhythms of Mister Ploog, Jay Dee Dougherty, or Tim Powell seduce you. Let it float you up, and cast you away to a distant shore..." (RYM)

Many thanks for this collection...looks like some great music for the weekend!
ReplyDeleteHi Big Bad Buddha,
DeleteYour welcome.
Hope you enjoy this as much as I did putting it together. Cheers.
Hi Butterboy, I've seen your comps over on TZ and have really enjoyed them. I'd be all over this if I didn't already own all of their albums. Steve Kilbey is such a prolific writer. As well as the The Church albums, he has about 35 of his own albums either solo or in combination with others. Thanks for promoting such a wonderful band. Keep up the great work.
ReplyDeleteHi Puffinrandy
DeleteThanks for visiting and commenting. The Church are a a great often underrated band. I also have all the Steve Kilbey material as well and I am not sure why he and The Church are not more greatly recognised (except for a few singles). They deserve more.
Cheers
Thanks for putting this up - all of your comps are obviously a labor of love, but this one really fills a need for me. This is one of those bands that I can only come at once in a while - I like most of what I've heard, but somebody who really knows them putting this together really helps me out.
ReplyDeleteHi simonthecat,
DeleteThanks for visiting and thanks for your kind words.
The Church are a group that seems to alienate, i am not sure why, but for me they are wonderful and there are not to many tracks I skip in their catalogue.
Cheers

Thanks very much for the re-up! Very kind.
DeleteThese guys were NOT psychedelic. They really weren't. I can't get over what a lot of people consider psychedelic. Play "Tomorrow Never Knows", "My White Bicycle", "Slip Inside This House", "25 O'clock", "Pow R. Touch" or "Flaming" then listen to any song by The Church. They were a rock band that would at times play quieter melodic songs, but hardly real psychedelia, imo.
ReplyDeleteHi Bmonster,
DeleteWhatever label The Church are identified with mean little to me. Their music is sensational and beautiful. Its a travesty they eluded mainstream success. This compilation exists to showcase the band to those a) who love their music already and b) to introduce them to a wider audience.
They are one of Australia's great Rock bands that played a variety of musical styles in their career, including Psychedelic Rock. [no offence was meant in the title of the post] Pink Floyd are a ROCK band in my opinion but get labeled with the Psychedelic rock label too. It doesn't matter to me, they are a great rock group.
I do appreciate you sharing your thoughts. I thinks we both agree that The Church are a great ROCK band whatever label they may be given.
Cheers.
Me again, Butterboy,
ReplyDeleteany chance to get those links renewed?
My Best
Maxx

Glad it worked for you, Max.
DeleteCheers.
hi, could you re upload these ones please ?
DeleteHi mark i.
DeleteA new link is established, tested and working.
Cheers.
You reminded me of a favourite band of mine. Had been a fan since their first album. In the late 80s I lost interest because ttheir songs got weaker imo. But you convinced me with this compilation that there was a lot more to discover in their later work. And so I have been listening through all their albums for the past few months. Of course not every single track is great and there are even whole weak albums but overall it's incredible how many good songs they made, even their 2023 album holds several of those. Can't think of *any* other band that kept such a high standard through such a long career. Thank you very much, without you I had missed a lot of great music by this outstanding group!
ReplyDeleteHi Wolfgang.
