ROD STEWART

Rod Stewart - Handbags & Gladrags, Underrated & Underappreciated (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1 + CD2

Sir Roderick David Stewart, CBE (born 10 January 1945) is a British rock singer and songwriter. Born and raised in London, he is of Scottish and English ancestry. Stewart is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold over 100 million records worldwide. He has had six consecutive number one albums in the UK and his tally of 62 UK hit singles includes 31 that reached the top ten, six of which gained the #1 position. Stewart has had 16 top ten singles in the US, with four reaching #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. He was knighted in the 2016 Birthday Honours for services to music and charity.

With his distinctive raspy singing voice, Stewart came to prominence in the late 1960s and the early 1970s with The Jeff Beck Group (1967–1969) , and then with Faces (1969–1975), though his music career had begun in 1962 when he took up busking with a harmonica. In October 1963, he joined Jimmy Powell and the Five Dimensions as a harmonica player and part-time vocalist. Stewart signed a solo contract, releasing his first single, "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl", in October. He maintained a solo career alongside a group career, releasing his debut solo album, An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down in 1969 (Which didn't chart in the UK (?)).

Rod Stewart has many successes and has always tried to stay relevant over the years. He can rock with the best of them and where I find him best is when he sings ballads. He is a great songwriter but can also interpretative singer that takes ownership of someone else's songs. Of course we all have our favorite period Rod Steward. But you must admire his longevity and ability to stay relevant. At times he sounds like Sam Cooke and at others like a Rolling Stone. Whatever he sings and shares with us is rewarding.

He is also an underrated artist with a treasure-trove of deep cuts in his catalog. Here are a bunch of Rod Stewart tracks ( I have left out any The Great American Songbook series he made) that  are often underrated & underappreciated or just forgotten. Some solo songs and some with his previous bands covering his entire career. Enjoy!

  1. Thanks - this should be a good listen. Based on my concert-going days (60s-70s, UK mostly)), Rod Stewart was one of the hardest working artists around. Probably the only comparable artist was Elton John... They both sang their heart out to make sure the audience enjoyed the show...

    Cheers,

    1. I've listed to it several times now and apart from the track order on a few songs I really like it too. I felt it best to place the tracks chronologically for this on.
      Cheers

  3. Thank you for your latest compilation, courtesy of Rod himself - you didn't waste a moment, between coming up with the idea, and sharing it with the world. And I'm delighted that you included my personal favorite, "People, Get Ready", and others I haven't heard in quite a while. Cheers!
