POPelganger & ROCKelganger (A Butterboy Compilation) (6 x CD's)

POP & ROCK SOUNDALIKES

POPelganger & ROCKelganger (A Butterboy Compilation) (6 x CD's)

A doppelgänger is a non-biologically related look-alike or double of a living person... Popelgangers & Rockelgangers are artists that, in most cases, purposely imitate the established style of another artist. Sometime they do such a good job that it is difficult to differentiate the two artists. Sometimes its one of our favourite artists that sound like other great artists we know.

When I first heard these songs I had to think twice to know who the artist was. Sometimes it was the voice, sometimes it was the music, sometimes a track seems the same but at a slower of faster tempo. Whatever the reasons  for that mind-flip are, it is because it sounds unmistakably similar to another artists work. So here are 120 tracks that will cause confusion at times but all-in-all are still great to listen to. See if you believe the artist playing is deliberately channeling another artist or not. Enjoy!

  2. I like this concept, and your selections - especially the parallels I hadn't noticed before, plus names that are entirely new to me. You've gone nicely far beyond simply, say, Beatles sound-alikes (Oasis, Enuff Z'Nuff ("Fly High, Michelle"), Tears for Fears ("Sowing the Seeds of Love"), etc.), and all the other artists' many pale shadows.

I'm already looking forward to the second part, with fingers crossed that you may have included Giuffria, "Call to the Heart" (Journey), and Beaver Brown "Tender Years" or "On the Dark Side" (Bruce Springsteen). If they didn't make the cut, maybe someday there'll be a "Son of Poppelgänger"? Another track for that one might be Ronnie McDowell's "The King Is Gone"... so many further possibilities!

In any case, thank you for this one!

    1. Hi Aging Child,
I may disappoint as I've included "Sowing the Seeds Of Love" in PART2 Some of the other tracks are included and I think you will like track 110 as a sound alike.

One day I may do a "Son of POPelganger" (Sorry don't know how to add the umlaut on my computer) compilation and include missing artists . And, I agree, so many possibilities.

      Cheers

PS Here, for you, is my BEST OF for this compilation. Enjoy this shorter version. Its the one I developed prior to the expanded set. 25 Tracks

  3. Nope; not at all disappointed, Butter! And thanks for the bonus, as well, which I'll check out shortly... and for the nudge about Rumer, one of those new names; I'll check that one out, too. (RIP, Karen)

There are several ways to make umlauts - e.g., if you're using Windows and are typing up your text in Word, just hit ctrl/shift/: at the same time, and then your vowel of choice; voilà: ä, ë, ï, ö, ü, and sometimes ÿ; then just cut and paste into whatever text you're typing up for your latest excellent post. (Similar key combinations will give you accents and further non-English Latin-letter characters.)

And one's character of choice is really unimportant; music transcends all alphabets, and "hath charms to soothe the savage breast" - that's what moves one's heart and soul, not how many dots or slices are hovering over your vowels. So keep doing what you've been doing, and just the way you've been doing it. Enjoy the weekend, and coming week!

    1. Rumer reminds me of Karen but the Madona track i swear was Chrissie Hynde...

Thanks for the keyboard instructions. I was going to avoid umlauts but that would be disrespectful if you know. I feel OK with POPelgangers and ROCKelgangers as they are not real words:)

Your last paragraph is absolutely true. At the end of the day its the music that is moving us here.

If you want Rumer albums there are a few coming in THE CRATE.

      Cheers

  8. Definitely one of your best compilations. The similarities you found are incredible and most of them absolutely convincing. E. g. for some reason it had never occured to me how strongly America's big hit reminded of Neil Young – but listening now the scales fell from my eyes. Or The Talking Heads mimicking Joy Division - it's so obvious once you listen from this perspective.

You should warn your listeners: "Beware – you won't be able to un-hear this!!" ;)
