Prince - The Guitarist, Live and In the Studio CD1 + CD2 (A Butterboy Compilation) + Prince - 30 Prince Ballads (A Butterboy Compilation)

Prince Rogers Nelson (June 7, 1958 – April 21, 2016) was an American singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, dancer, actor, and filmmaker. A guitar virtuoso known for his genre-crossing work, wide-ranging singing voice and flamboyant stage appearances, Prince is regarded as one of the greatest musicians in the history of popular music. Prince sold over 130 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time. He won seven Grammy Awards, seven Brit Awards, including an International Artist, two International Solo Artist and two International Male Solo Artist awards, six American Music Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe Award. He was also honored with special awards including the Grammy President's Merit Award, the American Music Award for Achievement and of Merit, and the Billboard Icon Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006 and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2016. In 2016, he was posthumously honored with a Doctor of Humane Letters by the University of Minnesota. Rolling Stone ranked Prince at No. 27 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. (Wikipedia)
When contemplating a Prince Compilation, I didn't just want to present his Greatest Hits, which has been done well before. So I looked at his skills as a performer and quickly realized that his skills as a guitarist is exceptional and has not been explored in a compilation before. This compilation for is Prince, The Guitarist.

Prince was one of those artists that comes about every 100 years or so. He is unique in his ability to share the best characteristic of other artist that influenced him and meld it into his brand Soul, Funk, R&B Rock and Pop, whilst defying easy categories of race, genre and commercial appeal. Prince may just be among the most versatile and restlessly experimental pop artists of our time. His innovative music integrated a wide variety of styles, including Funk, R&B, Rock, New-Wave, Soul, Psychedelia, and Pop, sometimes within the same song.  Belatedly, though, a consensus is forming behind his primary status as a fearsome and gifted guitarist. Without doubt he is a guitar master, respected by his contemporaries as a genius instrumentalist and masterful showman. You can hear Prince's hit songs a thousand times without noticing the tasty guitar solos. Prince doesn't often put his guitar solo out front. He integrates the guitar playing into the total song package.   When Prince died we didn't just lose an amazing singer, we lost one of the most important guitarists of this generation. Prince places guitar solos in places you don't expect to hear one, both on albums and when playing live. He doesn’t play by the traditional guitar soloing rules. I am saddened that he’s gone. He was way, way too young.”

Here is gathered some of Prince's best guitar solos of all-time, 60 tracks that highlight Prince's ability as a guitarist both Live and in the Studio. These truly astonishing numbers, some of them deep cuts, should convince even skeptics.

Prince could also write and play some of the most melodic and beautiful ballads. Prince nearly every Prince album has a great ballad on it.  Although a few of these are not technically ballads, they do have a ballad or slow jam like feel. As a Bonus, included here are 30 tracks dedicated to his ability to be tender and fragile.

Additionally, I have included a fanzine titled UPTOWN, dedicated to all things Prince. The front covers alone are worth the entry. Here are PDF's of Uptown 01 - 60.

    1. Hi Il Commendatore,
When I first listened to Prince it was , shall we say, an experience. Then something clicked and I could not get enough of his amazing songs. The structure of his writing, the unusual use of instruments and his great voice. I hope you find something within these compilations that brings you a little closer to Prince.

      Cheers

  6. Thanks Butterboy. I am going to enjoy this as I have other compilations you have put together and shared. When Prince performed the superbowl I was blown away -- and he did it in the pouring rain. We have lost a lot of artist too early but when Prince and Bowie died I cried because the world lost too beautiful pieces of art. -TheJ

  7. I had found myself not particularly liking what I'd heard of his recorded work, but when I got to see a taped live performance I was overblown by his on-stage energy and the sheer virtuosity and mastery of the performance. He took the quirky, reclusive, genius artist thing to a whole new level. You're obviously a fan now to encapsulate and assemble this comp so brilliantly. Prince fans will be overjoyed and indebted for sure. I'm always thankful for your comps, BB.

    1. Hi Mr Radio,
I am a fan of Prince but he grew on me as I open my ears to the differences he created. He is so prolific and its hard to listen to everything without finding something that is amazing. There are also many compilation of hits by Prince so I didn't really want to do a compilation of Hits, so concentrated on his guitar work which is not like your average playing. Caution, once his music gets under your skin it hard to not like it. His magnetic personality is always felt. He has left us an amazing legacy of work for us to enjoy.

      Cheers
