The theme of this package is generally in the popcorn and beat ballad northern soul mould of the early to mid 60s, with a few teen slanted songs mixed in, including some group sounds. All feature strong production values, as is more than evidenced by the songwriters, arrangers and producers involved. The singers also played their part and we're again left wondering why so many didn't achieve more than the modicum of fame than history shows. 26 obscure tracks from 1961-1965, all tracks digitally remastered and most have never been re-issued on CD before. One standout rarity is No Mail On Monday, an early, silky-smooth single from Kenny Gamble, while Andrew Loog Oldman also makes a surprise appearance, having somehow produced the Goffin/King-penned Stage Door for Peter James (before ex-Searcher Tony Jackson covered it). There’s even a rare Jack Nitzsche arrangement courtesy of The Escort’s You Can’t Even Be My Friend – certainly one of the strongest tracks here.
