VA - Latin Rock (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1 + CD2 + CD3

Latin rock is the fusion of Rock music, often Psychedelic Rock, with Latin American rhythms, especially Afro-Latin genres. Latin rock puts an emphasis on percussion, making the style quite danceable through psychedelic influences (mainly acid guitars and organ). It was developed during the early 1970s throughout the Americas after Santana exploded into the rock scene. North American Latin rock was mainly played by the Californian Latino community (although New York also had a fair number of bands) which incorporated some identifiable elements, related specially to Chicano culture. By the second half of the 1970's most bands had disbanded, and others moved to more Latin Soul/Latin Funk sounds.  In Latin America the genre was much sparser (as opposed to the California-concentrated scene in the North), with bands all over the continent.    Latin rock should not be confused with "Rock music from Latin America" or Rock en español. It's also closely related to the Latin alternative scene (which combines Latin elements with alternative rock, pop, electronic music, indie or hip hop among others) a term often used to refer the same phenomenon. (Wikipedia)

The following music contains songs from Hispanic America, U.S, Mexico, Cuba, Peru, Argentina, and Spain artists that became part of Rock & Latin Alternative Culture and which influenced or impacted in Latin rock music.  The way the percussion lives among the organ sounds and the guitars and brass leads are wonderful.  Here are 76 Latin flavored songs to enjoy!

  1. Nice posting, Butterboy, but we, Brazilians, are under presented here. "Secos&Molhados" is one of our greatest rock bands of all times, but we have others so wonderful as them. Try "Mutantes", "Som Imaginário", "Legião Urbana", for instance. Thank you for the blog, always!

    1. Hi Carlos,
Thanks for sharing this information. To be honest I don't know a lot about Brazilian artists, but I do have Som Imaginário and Mutantes but I don't know Legião Urbana, so your suggestion will be explored. What I do have and have heard is wonderful.
      Cheers.

  2. Brazilian rockers would also likely be hip to a 'true' descendent of the original Cali-latin/chicano rock era and style, the 'band' known as 'Tribe Of Gypsies', from Los Angeles. Naturally, because of their connection to (and talent tapped by...) the British metal giants Maiden and Priest, beloved in Brazil. Gene Simmons once called them "Santana on steroids". Carlos himself never forgot the impression they had made on him when TOG supported Santana on a California leg. It's been said, Carlos had interest in recording 'We All Bleed Red', (... brothers and sisters).
Thanks for the musical journey, BB.
Dig your song picks for Sapo and Ronstadt, at first glance.

  4. I really like this compilation. Nicely done. I saw that you have Malo which was Jorge Santana's band (Carlos Brother) who also had a great solo album with a huge hit "Suavecito" which is worth following up with. All in all this is quite good!

    1. Thanks, Pol.
I am glad I reposted it.
As you well know it takes many hours to produce a compilation like this.
When someone thanks you that is all that is needed to know you made someone happy.
      Cheers.
