SOUL
VA - The Legendary Keb Darge, Soul Spectrum Volume II [1999]
BBE (Barely Breaking Even) is a renowned independent record label founded in 1996 by Peter Adarkwah and Ben Jolly. The label's name was inspired by the 1982 disco track "Barely Breaking Even" by the Universal Robot Band. Based in London, BBE has become a hub for music enthusiasts, offering a diverse range of genres, including soul, funk, jazz, hip-hop, house, and disco.
One of BBE's standout features is its dedication to unearthing and celebrating rare and classic tracks, particularly in the realm of soul and funk. The label has released numerous compilations that showcase hidden gems and forgotten masterpieces, often curated by influential DJs and collectors like Keb Darge. These compilations highlight the depth and richness of the soul and funk genres, bringing lesser-known tracks to a wider audience.
This volume unearths rare soul tracks, with Keb Darge's expert curation bringing together a mix of deep soul and funk. Artists featured include Tony Fox, King Tutt, and the Patterson Twins, among others. This volume maintains the high standard set by the first, offering a rich listening experience for fans of the genre. Culling all 21 tracks from his own vast collection of rare 45s. Darge does include some incredibly hard-to-find sides, but thankfully he has the good sense to pick appealing, danceable tunes. The result is a highly listenable compilation.
So, push back the coffee table, switch off the lights, and get ready for a proper soul party, this series delivers a grade-A soundtrack that will keep your dancefloor alive. (B)
