VA - David Hepworth, Deep 70's Underrated Cuts From A Misunderstood Decade [2022] (4 x CDs)

Four CD set. David Hepworth has been writing, broadcasting and speaking about music since the 70s. He was involved in the launch and editing of Smash Hits, Q, Mojo and The Word. He was one of the presenters of BBC TV's The Old Grey Whistle Test, and one of the anchors of the BBC's coverage of Live Aid in July 1985. He has written six books about music in the last five years: 1971 - Never a Dull Moment: Rock's Golden Year, Uncommon People: The Rise and Fall of the Rock Star, Nothing is Real: The Beatles Were Underrated And Other Sweeping Statements About Pop, A Fabulous Creation: How the LP Saved Our Lives, Rock & Roll A Level: The only quiz book you need and Overpaid, Oversexed and Over There: How a Few Skinny Brits with Bad Teeth Rocked America. David writes a weekly column on podcasts for Radio Times and throughout the past two years, with Mark Ellen, David has co-hosted well over a hundred Word In Your Attic interviews on YouTube, with appearances from a galaxy of musicians, journalists, broadcasters and authors.

This is a lovely release. Four themed CDs offer a chance to discover and enjoy music from the 1970s that is away from the mainstream but still highly accessible. From clever American songwriters such as Warren Zevon, through rockers, British bands and female vocalists, this is a treasure trove to enjoy over and over. David Hepworth's succinct and pithy notes on each track, along with artwork from the original album covers, makes the accompanying booklet an interesting browse as the music plays. The CD version takes up no more room than a small hardback book, so it's been nicely conceived and produced as a compilation set. With so much music here, that will be new to many, this is a great way to think about the seventies in new ways. Re-mastered sound across the tracks on the CDs also adds considerably to the listening pleasure. A real joy to experience. (Amazon)

  1. I have tried many times to explain "When An Old Cricketer Leaves The Crease" to my American friends and it never seems to impress them. It is in my top ten songs. Thanks BB (another one is "Porgy" in your Diva collection. Small world eh?)

    1. lemonflag,
Sometimes you just can't explain... but I admire those that keep trying.

    2. I genuinely tried to explain the real game of cricket, pre-white ball, to an American woman, and she looked at me and said ' ,, and they do all that on a horse?' ........

  2. Thanks Butter for this and other goodies.

  3. If at all possible, would you be able to do a set of Kate and Anna McGarrigle albums please?

  4. Would be great to have the accompanying 36-page booklet with track notes!
    An interesting collection this. Thanks

    1. Hi mrRadio.

    2. Doc really accentuates the appreciation.
      You are most accommodating. Thanks!!
