ACID FOLK

VA - Acid Folk, Chronicles of the Woven Vale (A Butterboy Compilation) CD1+CD2+CD3+ Bonus

Acid folk, often called psychedelic folk or freak folk emerged in the mid-to-late 1960s like mist rising from the forest floor. It blurred traditional balladry with hypnotic instrumentation, modal tunings, and lyrics that felt conjured rather than composed. You might hear sitars next to dulcimers, voices echoing like incantations, and melodies that seem unearthed rather than written. This wasn’t folk with flowers, it was folk with shadows, spells, and surreal devotion.

Early boundary-breakers like Donovan, The Holy Modal Rounders, and The Incredible String Band laid the groundwork, with ISB’s The 5000 Spirits or the Layers of the Onion often cited as a defining work. In your compilation, Way Back in the 1960s stands as a whimsical and satirical relic from that album, sly, playful, and dripping with countercultural reverence. Other cornerstone artists like Comus (Diana), Trees (The Garden of Jane Delawney), and Forest (A Fantasy You) and (Graveyard) helped steer folk music into visionary, ritualistic terrain.

The genre never exploded commercially, but it built a devoted cult following. By the late ’70s, it mostly vanished, living quietly in private pressings and dusty record store corners delighted by cult circles, diggers of forgotten vinyl.

Across 63 core tracks and 21 bonus selections, this is not just a listening experience, it's a living archive. Many entries are genuine rarities. Take "Prisoner" by Marie Celeste, a fragile track from a UK private press that floats somewhere between séance and lullaby. Or "If Words Were All I Had" by Bobb Trimble,a home-recorded masterpiece of outsider melancholy. There’s "Epitaph" by Oberon, pulled from their near-mythical 1971 LP, and "Sea Song" by Caedmon, glimmering with medieval modernism. "Dancing at Whitsun" by Stone Angel, a quietly devastating reflection on war and remembrance, is another deeply buried treasure now restored to light. And then there’s "I Feel the Sun" by Extradition, an Australian gem that opens like a sun prayer and ends like a breeze through ancient gums.

To listen to acid folk is to leave the road and follow mossy paths through story, sound, and spirit. It’s not just a genre, it’s a gateway. And once you cross through, something in you changes.

As a Bonus I have included a 21-track compilation titled VA - Proto Acid Folk, Before the Bloom (A Butterboy Compilation)

This compilation doesn’t just anticipate acid folk, it listens for it in the distance, like birdsong before rain.

Before acid folk unfurled into phantasmagoric pastoralism, a quieter revolution brewed in the margins. Drawing exclusively from tracks recorded before 1967, proto acid folk emerged between 1962-1966 as a spectral whisper of psychedelia meeting tradition, haunting modal guitar lines, mystical lyricism, and esoteric ballads delivered with emotional rawness.

Artists like Anne Briggs, Bert Jansch, and Joan Baez offer stark acoustic meditations, rooted in centuries-old melodies and delivered with emotional precision. Paired with avant-garde folk voices like Sandy Bull and the Holy Modal Rounders, whose experiments with form and tuning break the boundary between tradition and surrealism, the set captures a transitional moment in folk music’s evolution.

Lyrical sorrow, environmental dread, and mystical longing are recurring themes, from Bonnie Dobson’s apocalyptic "Morning Dew" to Karen Dalton’s fractured lament "Katie Cruel", each track whispers at the threshold of deeper psychedelic transformation. The sequencing arcs gracefully: starting with Appalachian lament and folk purity, moving through experimental cadence and poetic narrative, and culminating with the Incredible String Band’s "October Song", a quiet prophecy of the acid folk era to come. VA - A BOX of Jon Savage [2015-2024] (20 x CDs)

ROCK

VA - A BOX of Jon Savage [2015-2024] (20 x CDs)

There’s something almost cinematic about unpacking this Jon Savage anthology. Twenty CDs spanning tracks from 1955 to 1985, don’t just chart a musical history, they unravel a cultural one. And it’s not just a timeline; it’s a narrative, told with the sharp ear and sharper insight Savage has honed over decades. You can feel the transitions, not just in sound, but in sensibility, each year marking a tectonic shift in what music meant to its listeners and creators.

The early volumes, starting with 1965’s “The Year the Sixties Ignited,” are like stepping into a world on the edge of combustion. You hear it in the crackle of garage rock, the bite of early soul, the tremble of proto-psychedelia, all brimming with urgency, rebellion, and a kind of romantic defiance. By 1966 and 1967, the flames are roaring. Pop culture doesn’t just expand, it divides, mutates, and begins to mirror the turmoil brewing outside record shops and clubs. These years breathe volatility. Even the more polished tracks carry undercurrents of chaos, experimentation, and the growing self-awareness of a youth culture ready to shed its skin.

Then comes 1968, and Savage doesn't hold back. “The Year the World Burned” isn’t just clever titling, it’s prophetic. The selections feel like dispatches from the frontline: militant funk, fractured folk, acid-soaked rock. There's beauty, yes, but it’s jagged. Complicated. And it sets the stage perfectly for what follows, 1969 through 1971, when the rock dream both intensifies and begins to sour. These compilations capture the romantic residue of the ’60s fading into something more introspective, less utopian. Glam edges in, disillusion grows, and Savage curates with the sensitivity of someone keenly aware that music is both a mirror and a balm.

1972 to 1976 feels like a palette cleanse of sorts. It’s a period often ignored, splinters: glam theatricality, prog complexity, singer-songwriter sincerity. And Savage doesn’t just present the obvious; he invites us to hear the connections, to trace the emotional DNA running through seemingly disparate sounds.

By the time we hit 1977 and onward, the shift is stark. “Symbols Clashing Everywhere” is punk, yes, but it’s also post-punk, dub, DIY ethos. It’s not just about rage, it’s about reconstruction. The idea of pop itself is under interrogation. Then come the early ’80s sets: “The Art of Things to Come” and “Welcome to Techno City.” Suddenly, the tools change. Synths replace strings, drum machines challenge drummers, and Savage makes sure we feel that transition, not as a loss, but as evolution. There’s future shock in these compilations, but also a kind of exhilaration.

And woven into this expansive journey is one of the most essential statements in the whole box, “The Secret Public.” Here, Savage turns his focus toward the LGBTQ+ roots and resonance in pop culture between 1955 and 1979. It’s a revelation. Not framed as “otherness,” but as foundational. Glam, disco, torch songs, coded lyrics and open declarations, they’re all part of a lineage that shaped the very sound of rebellion, romance, and reinvention. These discs don’t feel like an addendum; they’re central. They color the entire anthology with deeper understanding.

So boxing all these sets together isn’t just about collecting Jon Savage’s work, it’s about presenting a curated museum of moments, emotions, and movements. It plays like a playlist for cultural memory: sometimes joyful, sometimes jagged, always thought-provoking. It’s music as time travel, as resistance, as self-discovery. And above all, it’s music as truth. (B)
