SOUNDS OF THE SEVENTIES
VA - Sounds of the Seventies [1990-1991] Take Two (10 x CD's)
"Sounds of the Seventies" was first issued in the summer of 1989, with the first album covering 1970. and again in early-to-mid 1990s, spotlighting pop music of the 1970s. As was the case with Time-Life's other series, "Sounds of the Seventies" was advertised in television and magazine advertisements. The series was available by subscription; those who purchased the series in that fashion received a new volume roughly every other month (on the format of their choice), and had the option of keeping the volumes they wanted. Each volume was also offered for individual sale. When the series was fully issued, a customer could purchase the entire series at once (or a group of albums, as packaged by Time-Life as part of a promotion), often at a discounted price. Much like Time-Life's other series chronicling popular music, volumes in the "Sounds of the Seventies" series covered a specific time period, including individual years in some volumes, and different parts of the decade (for instance, the early 1970s) in others; in addition, some volumes covered specific trends, such as music popular on album-oriented rock stations on the FM band. Each volume was issued on either compact disc, cassette or vinyl record. Individual volumes generally contained anywhere between 18 and 22 tracks, and represented the highlighted time period's most popular and noteworthy tracks. Also included was a booklet, containing liner notes written by some of the most respected historians of the genre, photographs of the artists, and information on the songs (writers, performers and peak position on Billboard magazine's Billboard Hot 100 chart). ReplyDeleteHi hotrodmike,
DeleteYou are welcome.

Yea! and thanks again!! For me this period is amazing for music. Many genres we have grown to love were either birthed or really took root during this time, even though they weren't known to be genres at the time. Just to name a few... bubblegum, folk-pop/rock, baroque-pop, singer-songwriter, soft pop/rock, hard rock, yacht-rock and the SoCal sound, Latin-rock, brass/horn-pop/rock, salsa, funk, soul, R&B, 70s pop, AOR, heavy metal, punk, progressive (prog-rock), and don't forget disco. Whew! Pretty crazy amazing, right? Scanning the tracklists, all songs are great and relevant to their year, but I'm glad they included Blue Magic (very under-rated, just sayin'), and happy to see Nicolette Larson close-out the series, she had talent for being more than a one-hit wonder but died way too young, as did Croce and Chapin. Hooray and thank goodness for the 70's!
