SOUNDS OF THE SEVENTIES

VA - Time Life Sounds Of The Seventies 1970 - 1979 [1989] (10 x CD's).

"Sounds of the Seventies" was first issued in the summer of 1989, with the first album covering 1970. and again in early-to-mid 1990s, spotlighting pop music of the 1970s. As was the case with Time-Life's other series, "Sounds of the Seventies" was advertised in television and magazine advertisements. The series was available by subscription; those who purchased the series in that fashion received a new volume roughly every other month (on the format of their choice), and had the option of keeping the volumes they wanted. Each volume was also offered for individual sale. When the series was fully issued, a customer could purchase the entire series at once (or a group of albums, as packaged by Time-Life as part of a promotion), often at a discounted price. Much like Time-Life's other series chronicling popular music, volumes in the "Sounds of the Seventies" series covered a specific time period, including individual years in some volumes, and different parts of the decade (for instance, the early 1970s) in others; in addition, some volumes covered specific trends, such as music popular on album-oriented rock stations on the FM band. Each volume was issued on either compact disc, cassette or vinyl record. Individual volumes generally contained anywhere between 18 and 22 tracks, and represented the highlighted time period's most popular and noteworthy tracks. Also included was a booklet, containing liner notes written by some of the most respected historians of the genre, photographs of the artists, and information on the songs (writers, performers and peak position on Billboard magazine's Billboard Hot 100 chart).  (Wikipedia)

"Sounds of the Seventies" [1989] 10xCD, 198-song package is what is offered here. The original pressings of this CD08  had Track 2 as "Dancing Queen" by ABBA (the one used here) which was replaced with "Serpentine Fire" by Earth Wind and Fire's on later pressings.

Other Items from the series will follow later.

  1. Great selections, and a fine collection; thanks, Butter. And what a decade it was; the covers alone say it: from Hendrix to Harry, by way of the Gibbs!

    1. Hi Aging Child,
This is a great set to listen to. I love your description Hendrix to Harry. Sounds like a compilation title. The fact that Time Life uses original sources for their comps only means you are getting the best sounds.

      Cheers

    2. Heh-heh; if it's a compilation title, it's one you'll ably put together... although this set (and the Take Two revisit) would be hard to top for just the reasons you point out. These disks will be some sweet, reminiscent listening...
