GREAT JAZZ BALLADS
VA - Stardust, Great Jazz Ballads CD1+CD2+CD3 (A Butterboy Compilation)
A ballad is a song that tells a story, and it can be intense, funny, or romantic. You can find ballads in a variety of musical styles. In jazz and popular music, the term ballad signifies a short song in a slow tempo, usually with a romantic or sentimental text. In jazz the ballad style is intimate, lyrical and melodic. It is usually performed at a relaxed rhythm. In the best jazz ballad instrumental playing you can hear a story unfolding even without lyrics being sung.
In jazz, sentimental ballads are an emotional style of music that often deal with romantic and intimate relationships, usually in a poignant but solemn manner. Most pop standard and jazz ballads are built from a single, introductory verse, usually around 16 bars in length, and they end on the dominant – the chorus or refrain, usually 16 or 32 bars long. They usually have a rhyming pattern. Ballads are generally melodic enough to get the listener's attention. Sentimental ballads tend to have a lush musical arrangement which emphasize the song's melody and harmonies. Typically, ballads use acoustic instruments such as guitars, pianos, saxophones, and sometimes an orchestral set. Instrumental jazz ballads contain a lot of dialogue even though only by emphasizing an instruments beauty.
The following tracks are mostly instrumental. There are some vocal tracks within to introduce additional flavor. Some tracks are played live and give a wonderful intimate atmosphere as when listening to the opening track Stardust played by Ben Webster. This compilation is best served on a quite evening or on a slow Sunday morning. Your choice. Enjoy!

Hi Roz,
DeleteThanks for letting me know.
I didn't notice the missing track. Most unusual.
Also there is a track disc two that should be removed as it is inferior quality .
I will redo Cd2 and re-post when i can.

DeleteThe Ben Webster tracks on this collection really stand out for me. Do you happen to have any Ben Webster anthologies that you can share, other than Chronological Classics series? Thanks.
